Frost Bonnet is a premium plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 11.8.1 update. It can be tapped to switch between ice and fire attacking modes, spitting ice or flames in an 3x2 area. The fire bloom mode is able to deal fire damage to zombies via leaving fire grid items, while the ice bloom mode has the trait of chilling and having a chance to turn zombies into ice blocks. Frost Bonnet's fire mode and Plant Food effect both deal double damage to chilled or frozen zombies. It is immune to frost and warms nearby plants.

Frost Bonnet is immune to fire attacks from the following zombies or grid items: Explorer Zombie, Torchlight Zombie, Turquoise Skull Zombie, Gargantuar Prime, Jester Zombie (returned fire projectiles), Zombot Dark Dragon, Zombot Dinotronic Mechasaur, Crater, Super-Fan Imp, Firebreather Zombie, and Flame Trap Tile. In many cases, the mentioned zombies will be forced to just eat it instead.

Origins

Frost Bonnet is based on the bluebonnet, a flower that belongs to the genus Lupinus predominantly found in the southwestern United States.

Winter-mint

Plant Food: Launches a combo fire and ice attack at nearby zombies. Zombies destroyed will turn into an ice wall.

Frost Bonnet can switch between Fire and Ice bloom. Each mode deals a different damage type, allowing Frost Bonnet to both either set zombies on fire or freeze them solid.

Dave has set a few rules to maintain order at the house. Keep the lawn clean. Turn off the faucet after watering. No munching on zombies after midnight. The rules are there to keep all plants comfortable and happy. There is a special rule that applies only to Frost Bonnet. No touching the thermostat! Hot or Cold? It just needs to pick one.

Plant Food effect

When given Plant Food, Frost Bonnet launches a combo fire and ice attack at nearby zombies. Zombies destroyed will turn into an ice wall.

Winter-mint effect

When boosted by Winter-mint, Frost Bonnet will deal an additional 140 damage (increases by 30 damage for each level) with its ice attack, an additional 130 damage (increases by 30 damage for each level) with its fire attack, an additional 1000 (level 1-4) / 1500 (level 5-9) / 2000 (level 10) damage with its Plant Food attack, its damage boost to chilled zombies is increased by 1 (level 1-5) / 1.5 (level 6-10), and its chance to turn zombies into ice block is increased to 75%.

Strategies

Frost Bonnet has the unique property of containing fire and ice, a normally anti-synergistic combination, into a single plant. While it deals respectable damage in both of its forms and is also able to encase zombies into ice blocks on its ice form, it is best advised to use both forms to maximize its damage, as its fire attacks inflict extra damage versus frozen or chilled zombies in exchange for defrosting them. With these factors in mind, planting one or two columns of Frost Bonnets of alternating forms is its most optimized formation.

Use Frost Bonnet like you would use Snapdragon due to having the same methods of attacking with the same area-of-effect range. So tactics that work with him can also work with Frost Bonnet. Albeit, to an even greater effect due to its stronger damage; even with its fire form alone. With it also being immune to freezing winds in Frostbite Caves and warming plants around it at the same time. One more perk it has is an immunity to fire attacks, allowing it to survive any form of burning that would otherwise remove an average plant.

Its Plant Food effect provides a good burst of damage that only gets stronger as it shares the same properties as its fire form's attacks on chilled foes. Made better by its large area that also hits behind it.

For all its strengths, Frost Bonnet is not without weaknesses; sharing the same caveats any other close-range plant has. Zombies such as Wizard Zombie and Octo Zombie can disable it completely and its somewhat slower attack speed and inability to attack behind itself outside of its Plant Food effect makes it vulnerable against any zombie launched right on top of or behind it like imps, ambushes, and zombies moved by dinosaurs.

Trivia

• According to the official v11.9 release post on Reddit:
  • Frost Bonnet's different forms are two separate personalities, with the fire personality being "hot headed" and impulsive, and the ice personality being "cool headed" and calculating.
  • When one personality is fronting, the other is "sleeping".
  • Both personalities are aware of the others existence, but not what they are doing or thinking at any given time.
  • It is unknown in-universe what causes the personalities to switch, as neither personality can switch willingly.
  • Frost Bonnet is forbidden from helping with house chores, as "it can never decide on what it wants to do next. "
• Frost Bonnet is so far the only Winter-mint plant capable of warming other plants, regardless of the mode it is in.
• Frost Bonnet is one of the few fire plants not associated with the Pepper-mint family.
