Gumnut
“ | ” | |
Gumnut is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2, that was first introduced in the 8.0.1 update. She[1] is a single-use defensive plant that trap and blocks zombies with gum, whose health scales with that of the targeted zombie proportionately.
About
Gumnut is a seasonal Arena plant, unlockable with seed packets. She is a single-use plant that, when approached by zombies, will blow bubble gum that pops on all enemies in a 1x1 area around her, immobilizing them and causing them, as well as other zombies that come after, to attack the gum. If the immobilized zombie is defeated, the gum despawns.
- The gum's health formula is as followings:
Gum base health + zombie health x gum health boost number/100
- For example, in the case of Gladiator Gargantuar, a level 1 Gumnut's gum health will be: (8000 + 5400 × 300 ÷ 100 = 24200)
- The gum also has the ability to withstand instant kills from zombies, such as Gargantuar smashes, Zombot missiles, and their lasers. The mentioned instant kills will only deal 1500 damage to it, except for smashes from Gladiator Gargantuar and Gargantuar Bronzes, which respectively deal 1875 and 500 damage to it instead.
- Zombies trapped by gum are immune to movement induced by various sources such as Power Toss, Spikeweed, Caulipower, Toadstool, Chomper, Primal Peashooter, Chard Guard, etc.
- Gumnut will not affect zombies that are being stunned by Contain-mint. Additionally, Imp Pear's Plant Food effect & hypnosis from Caulipower/Enchant-Mint will remove the gum.
Chinese version
In the Chinese version, Gumnut functions slightly differently:
- The gum's health formula is as following:
Gum base health + zombie health x 2
- Gumnut's gum health caps at 100,000 damage
- She cannot immobilize the following zombies:
Origins
Gumnut is based on a "gumnut," the hardened seed container of the Eucalyptus trees native to Australia.
Her name is a double-entendre - it refers to both eponymous real-life plant and her ability to generate gum.

Strategies
Gumnut can be a very useful plant in certain levels. She is best used in levels where lots of zombies spawn because Gumnut can throw gum on multiple zombies. Keep in mind that the gum has a base health of 8000, rivaling that of the Tall-nut, and is able to resist instant-kills. This plant is very useful when used on Gargantuars and the machines in Far Future since gum created from them will be more durable, and their damage limit ability makes sure the threats will take a while to make through. Due to the gum's high health, this plant can be paired up with weaker plants preventing them from being eaten. She can also be used with close range plants like Bonk Choy, Wasabi Whip, and Pokra allowing them to do as much damage as possible. This can also be used on dangerous zombies like Octo Zombies, Wizard Zombies and Fisherman Zombies to prevent them from activating their abilities - While they normally don't eat most plants, they must eat the gum anyway. The same can also be applied to Zombies that are affected by Dinosaurs in Jurassic Marsh as she renders them less dangerous.
Another plant that can be paired with is Hot Date/Sweet Potato, since they can be used to pull zombies together, maximizing Gumnut's effect.
You can also use her early in a level to stall zombies while the sun producing plants produce more sun, but this may turn out to be detrimental since she has a somewhat high cost.
Using Ice Bloom on a zombie with low health that has been immobilized by Gumnut is a good idea, as the frozen zombie will not vanish until the level ends or if the ice block is destroyed. Other zombies must get through the gum before they can reach the ice block. However, to maximize her value, you may want to bring heavy hitters and time your Ice Bloom properly and/or bring Winter-Mint, which makes this strategy highly inconsistent. Using her with Chomper (Since its buff) is an effective strategy that gives the Chomper more time to eat the zombies. She also makes an effective combo with Tiger Grass, as Gumnut pins zombies and stops them from damaging Grass Tigers.
It is also worth noting that Gumnut has a relatively fast recharge compared to other defensive plants, but as an instant, she can be unreliable as the Gum is only present until the zombie is defeated and may not absorb sufficient damage to make a difference. She can also be problematic in Big Wave Beach, as tides can wash away the gum and zombies in them are immune. The same applies for Z-Mech, whose teleportation easily frees trapped zombies.
It is also not recommended to use this plant in levels where you can't lose any, as this effectively defeats her purpose as an instant plant.
