Mega Gatling Pea is a returning peashooting plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 9.8.1 update for the Mega Gatling Pea's Mega Arena season.
He burst-fires 4 peas at zombies every 1.35-1.5 seconds, with a chance to randomly activate his Plant Food ability every time he attacks while on the lawn.
Once his Plant Food ability activated, he burst-fires 5 peas. This upgrade persists until he is destroyed or removed from the lawn with a shovel.
Origins
Mega Gatling Pea is based on the plant from Plants vs. Zombies with a similar name and appearance.
His almanac entry is a reference to his appearance in Plants vs. Zombies and his status as an upgrade plant.

Strategies
At first appearance, Mega Gatling Pea is just a pea plant that can fire four peas, just like four Peashooters or two Repeaters. It however shines due to it only taking one space for the same amount of firepower, and has a chance to activate its plant food effect that boosts its regular attack.
Some may compare Mega Gatling Pea with Pea Pod or Threepeater. In contrast with Pea Pod, Mega Gatling Pea is more expensive initially, but has a lower total cost. As for Threepeater, Mega Gatling Pea has no problem of uneven suppression but only covers one lane. In short, which plants to use depends on the actual situation.
Mega Gatling Pea can be the most powerful (or highest-fire) plant in the game if he is used with Pea Vine, Torchwood, and Appease-mint. Appease-mint provides a high damage increase and can also boost its Plant Food effect.
Mega Gatling Pea is still vulnerable to Tombstone, Excavator Zombie, and Jester Zombie, just like other peashooting plants. Additionally, after his peas pass through Torchwood, Imp Dragon Zombies can be immune to this attack. Draftodil and Stickybomb Rice can be used as support, as their projectiles can briefly disable Jester Zombies, allowing Mega Gatling Pea's attacks to connect. Draftodil has a chance to instantly kill Imp Dragon Zombies, while Stickybomb Rice has no trouble dealing with Excavators.

Trivia
- Mega Gatling Pea's Almanac entry is the only instance the words "Plant Food" are used as a verb.
- Mega Gatling Pea's attack sound reuses those from Peashooter's Plant Food effect.
- Mega Gatling Pea uses the same watering and idle animations as Peashooter's.
- Mega Gatling Pea is currently the only returning upgrade plant from the first game to be a seed packet premium plant as Twin Sunflower, Spikerock and Winter Melon are world plants. Likewise, he is the fourth upgrade plant to return in Plants vs Zombies 2.
- Mega Gatling Pea and Dandelion are the only plants in Plants vs. Zombies 2 to have unique alternate versions exclusive to the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2.
- Mega Gatling Pea and Pea Vine are the only plants whose Plant Food effects can be boosted by Appease-mint.
- Mega Gatling Pea's peas are smaller than most other peashooting plants.
- At 400 sun, Mega Gatling Pea is the most expensive seed packet plant exceeding that of Boom Balloon Flower.
- Mega Gatling Pea was the only premium plant that had the Player's House/Modern Day grass background in his almanac instead of the blue background with bright squares. This bug was similar to Shadow Peashooter's, but this has been fixed in the 9.9.1 update.
- Cosmetic-wise, Mega Gatling Pea's helmet has one chevron and one star initially, which usually indicates a rank of private. After activating his plant food ability, the helmet now has three chevrons and three stars, reminiscent of the sergeant rank.
- Mega Gatling Pea's Almanac entry references to his original status being an upgrade of Repeater from the original game and his status being his own plant rather than an upgrade in this game.
- Mega Gatling Pea's ability of being able to activate Plant Food on his own is quite similar to certain premium plants from Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition (i.e. Bonk Choy, Laser Bean, etc...).
- Mega Gatling Pea shooting five peas after activating Plant Food for the first time bears a resemblance to his Plants vs. Zombies Heroes appearance who also shoots five peas.
