Noctarine is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 9.1.1 update. Noctarine explodes upon planting, wherein he creates a cloud of gas in a 3x3 area that continuously damages zombies (except Healer Zombie and Treasure Yeti). Zombies within the area will take more damage from shadow plants.

Alongside said gas, Noctarine also produces a shadow aura that is able to power shadow plants similarly to Moonflower. Because of this, he is an environment modifier.

In addition to being able to power shadow plants, Noctarine is a shadow plant himself. When Noctarine is powered by plants such as, Moonflower, Conceal-Mint, Gloom Vine, or even other Noctarines, the gas cloud he creates is able to slow down zombies and cause them to have a chance to explode themselves, dealing 10% damage of zombies' max health in a 3x3 area. In addition to the probability, the explosion trigger condition also requires that the zombie's health is equal to or less than twice the damage of the gas cloud.

Origins

Prunus persica var. nucipersica

Noctarine is based on the nectarine (Prunus persica var. nucipersica), a cultivar of peach (Prunus persica) that famously lacks fuzzy skins and is regarded commercially as a different fruit from the peach.

Noctarine's name is a portmanteau of nectarine, the plant he’s based on, and the prefix "noct-", which is used to refer to something pertaining to the night, referring to the fact that he is a shadow plant.

When boosted by Conceal-mint, Noctarine's powered gas will do an additional 140 damage, his damage boost will be increased by 2.5 times, and his corpse explosion damage will do an additional 10%.

Strategies

Noctarine can be used in tandem with Grimrose and especially Shadow-shroom, as both are single-use plants and Noctarine's use as an instant complements them well, producing a temporary shadow aura to power them when needed where other plants may not suffice. He actually already has very good uptime

Noctarine also forms an exceptional and surprising synergy with Gloom Vine, since Gloom Vine powers him immediately, and his attacks also cover a 3x3 area, allowing it to also deal bonus damage.

Trivia

• In version 9.0 of the game, Noctarine was included on Conceal-mint's list of family plants despite not being released yet.
• Noctarine is the only shadow plant to be an explosive plant and the only shadow plant to be an instant-use plant.
• Noctarine's powered gas can't actually slow zombies down.
• Noctarine can power Moonflower briefly, but the gas he leaves can't power her at all.
• Noctarine's gas is actually internally classified as a plant, having the codename noctarinecloud, due to this it has some weird interactions:
  • It can drown in the water tiles of Big Wave Beach or be destroyed by some zombies.
  • Vine plants or Lily Pads that are on the same tile as it cannot be dug up.
  • It can be modded to be selectable as a regular plant, though it does absolutely nothing when placed down.
• Sometimes a powered Noctarine would create normal gas. This was fixed in the 9.6.1 update.
