Olive Pit
“ | ” | |
Olive Pit is a premium plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 that was introduced in the 8.2.1 update. When planted, Olive Pit buries itself in the ground, and acts as a pitfall trap, swallowing and instantly killing any zombie that steps on it. After burying itself, every 7 seconds, Olive Pit spits out olive oil on the tile in front of itself, lasting 6 seconds.
Zombies that step on oil will have their speed and bite attack reduced by 33% (66% in the Chinese version). Once it becomes full, the Olive Pit will pause spitting out olive oil. Olive Pit spits out 3 puddles of olive oil in the three tiles in front of itself when finishing chewing. Zombie Chickens and Ice Weasels are swallowed without being counted in pit capacity.
In the Chinese version, Olive Pit's chew interval is increased to 60 seconds.
Origins
Olive Pit is based on the olive, the fruit of the Olea europaea tree native to the Mediterranean primarily harvested for its vegetable oil, a key ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine.
Olive Pit's name is a pun on its function as a pitfall trap and on the real-life pit that is the seed of an olive.

Strategies
Olive Pit can be seen as a much more flexible Chomper, as it can devour more zombies before chewing, cannot be destroyed by most zombies like Spikeweed, and spits out olive oil which slows approaching zombies in a similar fashion to Sap-fling. The trade-off is that Olive Pit is slightly more expensive, recharges a little slower, and cannot affect zombies that don’t walk over him. Olive Pit also does no continuous damage to targets it can’t swallow, unlike Chomper.
Due to Olive Pit's insta-kill nature, it makes an excellent plant for thinning out dangerous zombies from hordes. Its immunity to most zombies makes it a great option to plant in the right-hand columns, nearest to where the zombies spawn. A fully upgraded olive pit can consume six zombies before it needs to chew and then only spends 10 seconds chewing - this can be enough to significantly thin large hordes of zombies with very little drawback, as Olive Pit is safe from most harm whilst it's chewing.
However, Olive Pit does have some weaknesses. Flying enemies are completely immune to both the pit and the olive oil, and it is completely useless against Gargantuars, as they are too large to be swallowed and can destroy it as well. Machines are also too big to be swallowed, and while Jurassic Rockpuncher can be swallowed if Olive Pit is planted directly on it, it will notice it and destroy him instead of walking onto it. Olive Pit is also incapable of dealing with consistent zombie hordes, as it must eventually stop chewing. As such, bringing another offensive plant is essential, to not overwhelm the Olive Pits.
When boosted by Contain-mint, Olive Pit's capacity gets increased, allowing it to face a large group of zombies more easily, while its swallowing speed increased to level 10 standard. However, this still can't change his weaknesses, such as ignoring flying zombies and dealing no damage to non-edible zombies. The olive oil puddles it leaves and its creation interval remain unchanged, either. So to some extent, the procrastination ability of Olive Pit has not been strengthened.
Olive Pit is more suitable for dealing with critters such as Zombie Chickens, Ice Weasels and Zombie Monkeys than other swallowing plants, due to its fast reaction rate. But it will still miss a few things because there is actually a gap in its swallowing. Olive Pit makes a great guard against plants vulnerable to direct attack, such as Electric Currant or Phat Beet. Should your defenses not be adequate against all threats that approach them, Olive Pits are a great last ditch (literally) to stop any zombies that might crawl through.
Olive Pit is an excellent plant to use in Arena and Penny's Pursuit harder levels because it can devour most of the zombies that show up no matter their level, but the player should beware of Gargantuars, Jurassic Rockpunchers, flying zombies and machines. For the second and the third ones, Chomper or Toadstool are better. Or you can simply bring both.

Trivia
- Some zombies cannot be swallowed by Olive Pit when they're walking on it, for example, Far Future vehicle zombies (due to their sizes).
- Its animation when planted is reused from Intensive Carrot.
- Despite being a ground plant, it could, before the 8.3.1 update, be planted on Lily Pads as well as the planked lanes in the Pirate Seas. This was likely an oversight.
- Despite being an underground plant, it is affected by Boombox Zombie's music. This is likely another oversight.
- It is the second plant based on an olive, the first being Oily Olive.
- Olive Pit cannot be planted on wooden planks in Pirate Seas. This is most likely because it's an underground plant.
- It shares this trait with Potato Mine, Bamboo Shoot, Cactus, Celery Stalker, Primal Potato Mine, Escape Root, Snap Pea, Resistant Radish, Bamboo Bro and Lotus Shooter.
- Olive Pit cannot be planted on minecarts, either. If the player tries this, the message will appear: "Olive Pits make holes. No railcarts!".
