Scaredy-shroom is a returning mushroom plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 10.6.1 update as part of the "Scaredy-shroom's Fearful" Arena season.

He functions identically to how he did in the first game, firing spores at zombies from a distance and hiding when they approach a 3x3 area around him. Unlike in the first game however, Scaredy-shroom will acquire a defensive buff whenever he hides, allowing him to take 60% reduced damage from zombie attacks.

In the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, Scaredy-shroom was introduced in the v3.8.4 update alongside Aeonium and the ZCorp Secret Realm. Scaredy-shroom is this version has been given a visual overhaul to have more elements from his original design. He also no longer has damage reduction when hiding.

Origins

Scaredy-shroom is based on the plant from Plants vs. Zombies with the same name and appearance.

His ability to take reduced damage when hiding is based on his appearance in both of the Garden Warfare games and Battle for Neighborville.

Plant Food ability (animated)

When given Plant Food, Scaredy-shroom, and any other nearby Scaredy-shrooms in a 3x3 area, will fire a stream of spores that cause knockback and direct damage.

Ail-mint effect

When boosted by Ail-mint, Scaredy-shroom will deal double damage with his normal attacks, and an additional 30 damage (level 1-5) / 35 (level 6-7) / 40 (level 8-10) with his Plant Food attacks, while not retreating even with zombies in proximity.

Costumed (China only)

Increases number of spores fired by 50 and the spores now penetrate all zombies.

Strategies

Due to Scaredy-shroom's damage output and recharge statistics being similar to Peashooter's, and due to mushrooms no longer being nocturnal, Scaredy-shroom can be best utilized as a quick-planting Peashooter due to his cheaper cost, especially in Arthur's Challenge where sun can be scarce earlier on. To take advantage of this, it is recommended to plant Scaredy-shroom near the back of the lawn, which maximizes his firepower.

His Plant Food also comes in handy when it can knock back zombies, buying time for other plants to attack while also synergizing with Blover, as any zombie vulnerable to knockback will be briefly sent airborne, allowing Blover to destroy all of them.

Just note that like Peashooter, Scaredy-shroom's spores will be deflected by Jester Zombie, so make sure you pair him with plants that can either ignore or bypass the deflection such as Fume-shroom or Iceberg Lettuce.

Balance changes

Update 11.2.1

• ▲ Health is increased from 200-650 to 300-1200.

• ▲ Plant Food Duration is increased from 2-3 seconds to 2-4 seconds.

Trivia

• He was originally planned to return much earlier as an unlockable plant in the Dark Ages world, acting exactly the same as he did in the first game. While he was ultimately scrapped, he did have placeholder sprites and functioned as intended when hacked in game. It is not concretely known why he was scrapped from appearing in Dark Ages.
• He, Sea-shroom, and Puff-shroom are only plants that initiate a chain reaction of Plant Food.
  • Coincidentally, they are all returning mushrooms from the first game.
• He reuses sounds that are associated with Peashooters; for instance, Snap Pea and Shadow Peashooter have the same shooting sounds as him. He also shares these sounds with Sea-shroom.
  • In the Chinese version, he uses Puff-shroom's shooting sounds instead.

Specific to the Chinese version (China only)

• He, Catapult Zombie, and Doom-shroom are the only characters to have different designs between the international and Chinese versions. They were all redesigned to be more closely resemble their appearance in the original game.
  • Despite this, several of his elements from international version are present, such has his cap's art style, Plant Food animation and even retaining the same spore projectile appearance.
• Scaredy-shroom being a plant tied to ZCorp Secret Realm in this version may be a nod to the 10.6.1 menu screen in the international version, where Scaredy-shroom is shown inside the ZCorp building along with three other ZCorp zombies (ZCorp HelpDesk, ZCorp Consultant and ZCorp Chair Racer.)
• Scaredy-shroom, Plantern and Marigold are the only returning plants that recycle their almanac entries from the first game.
