Shrooms might stay awake in day, but mushrooms are special in other ways:

a) they are cheap. Not even one of them has cost 200 or more sun (I dont remember doom shrooms cost, so correct me if im wrong)

b) they have low hp. Is there any durable shroom? I dont remember any.

Technically, Gloom-shroom costs 225 total sun for you to get him, excluding the Coffee Bean required to wake him up in the day. To be fair, he does Phat Beet's job almost 4 times better.
Except for the fact that Phat Beet is far more practical at 150 sun and fast recharge, unlike Gloom-shroom who is 225 sun total and very slow recharge.
technically if you talk about sun, in PvZ 1 sun was only 25, so gloomshroom costs 9 sun, while phatbeet costs 3
Yeah, that is true. But let me ask a question. In comparacent to the second game, how slow is the original? What I am saying is recharges, plants and zombies were all slower (zombie spawn too) so the slow recharge wasn't the biggest problem. Just as a sidenote, I don't think it was created to even be used outside of survivals, just like Twin Sunflower. Or Gold Magnet. Or basically any other upgrade. Btw, Gloom-shroom deals 4 NDS every 1.5 sec and Phat Beet does ~5.25 every sec, so it isn't as useful as the original Gloom-shroom. Even less if we take the increased zombie movement speed into our calculations. Gloom-shroom was able to kill a regular zombie on the lane it was on, Phat Beet isn't.
again, it does cost much less sun. and they nerfed everything in pvz2. They even made it that snapdragon cant kill a normal zombie on its own

Why does the sun cost (225/300) even matter? Sun wasn't a problem in the first game, only in the second!
