Cai Lun
Cai Lun (蔡伦; pinyin: Cài Lún) was an inventor in the Eastern Han dynasty. He created a significantly cheaper way of producing high-quality paper.
Inspiration
Cai Lun found writing on crudely-made paper an uncomfortable hassle. The other two alternatives, being writing on silk and bamboo or wooden slips, were respectively to pricey and heavy. He found that the silk paper used for writing are leftover side-products when making silk clothes, rendering them rare and expensive. This inspired him to replace the silk using cheaper materials.
Creation
Cai Lun then used tree bark, tattered cloth, hemp wastes, fishnets and other materials, undergoing crushing, bashing, mixing and other procedures, finally creating a new high-quality paper that is very cheap. This type of paper was quickly popularized and was dubbed the "Cai Hou Paper" to honor Cai Lun.
