Upgrades are purchased from Crazy Dave's shop, must be planted on top of other plants, and cost 50 more sun every time they are planted in Survival: Endless.

In other games, the upgrade method is different. In Plants vs. Zombies 2 (Chinese version), the only upgrade, Cob Cannon just needs to be unlocked and upgraded the same way as the first game, while in Plants vs. Zombies Online, the original plant needs to be planted on top of itself to upgrade.
