Mine at first starts as normal after an update. It only glitches if I go off the game while the game is still open like you said but after some time it glitches regardless of what I do. I clean the cached data everytime before I play just for a chance of glitch not appearing. I used to think it was because of storage too but no matter how much apps I deleted for storage space, it kept happening.
