Almost everything you'll see there will end up in a blog at some point, so stay tuned if you want some spoilers!

Ballistic's 20's 2019 update

So it's been a while, hasn't it? You're favorite opinionated Admin is back with a whole new slew of opinions on the most backwards game in the franchise! The last time I did a blog like this was almost three years and ~20 versions ago, and A LOT has changed. There's the leveling system (which I obviously won't take into account here), Battlez (which I hardly play so take my opinions with a massive grain of salt here), and most importantly like 30 new plants or something like that, which gives me a lot to consider for these lists. These lists are going to look almost entirely different from last time, which should be exciting.

Rules and Format

  • The format is being switched around a bit, now going in order from Worst > Best > Least Favorite > Favorite. I did this because ending the list with my personal favorites has a greater impact imo.
  • Anything in the G-tier on my viability rankings will not be considered for the best/worst lists.
  • Plant Food is now fully taken into account.
  • Conjoined entries are allowed.

You all know how top 20 lists tend to work. One format change I am making is that there's not gonna be any table in reference to previous lists, since so much is different that it's not worth bringing anything like that up.

Dishonorable Mentions

Plant Reason
Enchant-mint2.pngEnchant-mint Enchant-mint gets this spot for being the absolute weakest of all the mints in the game, and for just legitimately being a bad plant. While the boosts it gives to a particular couple of plants are quite powerful, the other plants it boosts are either legitimately weak regardless of the boost, or are just bad plants without the boost. On top of having an already weak family and a very mediocre effect, Enchant-mint cements itself as a bad instant is that it only hypnotizes two zombies upon planting. Absolutely abysmal. Every other mint is more useful in some way compared to this pile of garbage.
Nightshade2.pngNightshade Nightshade is just so unbelievably weak it hurts. Not only is it almost entirely useless without Moonflower thanks to the fact that it can't regen leaves, and it literally can only kill a Conehead before becoming entirely useless, but even when boosted by Moonflower it's only really useful in the super early game when you can't afford literally anything. Sure, it's technically usable, which is why it's off the list proper, but it's super close to being completely worthless.
Sun Bean2.pngSun Bean Although there are some incredibly niche situations where Sun Bean is useful, more often than not I'd rather just bring Gold Bloom, Enlighten-mint, or even Solar Tomato. Sun Bean's niche has far outrun it's course at this point that the only time you'd really want to use it is when you're expecting a tough early zombie to help boost sun production. However, it's just general a plant not worth using in modern PVZ2.
Kernel-pult2.pngKernel-pult Kernel-pult is the finickiest plant in the entire game. When it wants to work, Kernel-pult is good at stalling zombies and allowing you to build an early defense. But Kernel-pult actually works in your favor maybe 25% of the time. That's abysmal, and for having such shite DPS, this plant is a one trick pony. There's so many better early game options in this game that it's a surprise that Kernel-pult is even usable at all.
Dazey Chain2.pngDazey Chain Dazey Chain is only a minor upgrade over Kernel-pult. While Dazey Chain is much better as an early DPS plant (although it's only a minor upgrade of Peashooter in this regard), it's much more inconsistent at stalling zombies with its stun. However, Dazey Chain takes too long to really get going, and its stun is just too inconsistent work reliably. At least Dazey Chain has an AOE stun.
Bowling Bulb2.pngBowling Bulb Bowling Bulb is just depressing. The plant absolutely sucks in game, and would have made this list if not for having a decent albeit outclassed at this point plant food effect. Bowling Bulb is great at creating chaos and clearing large hordes of zombies, but both Shadow-shroom and Ail-mint have pretty much stolen that niche from Bowling Bulb, making it nigh unusable.
Garlic2.pngGarlic Garlic is also depressingly bad in this game. Garlic was actually one of my personal favorite plants to use in PVZ1, but PVZ2 has not been a kind game to him by any stretch. Sure it has a ton more synergies now, but that's hardly worth it when this plant has had its HP basically cut by 2/3, and and its recharge also being quadrupled. What's also unfortunate is that this plant wasn't put in Reinforce-mint's family (it makes sense that it's in Ail-mint's family, but it's still unfortunate), meaning that it has even less longevity than it would like. Although Garlic is not entirely unusable, it's still quite mediocre.
