This is a the plants' place, you can go up a level when you get enough experience, you can also vanquish mini-bosses to instantly level up, eat some OPlant Food to instantly level up, or get a Cell Activation PF to instantly MAX out.
Some plants have special passive effects, this is commonly found in level 2 or 3 or higher plants, but some plants already have passive abilities even when level 1.
Regular or Plant food abilities that doesn't have a specific target (such as all enemies) can be controlled to hit specific enemies or affect specific allies.
Make sure you read ALL the details in your plant class, they might save you from getting K.Oed
