Shovel (armor)

Shovel is a shield used by Excavator Zombie. It blocks all straight-shooting projectiles, such as peas. Although the shovel is indestructible, and will be able to absorb all these attacks, non-projectile attacks (Toadstool, Laser Bean, Fume-Shroom, Ghost Pepper, Jalapeno, etc), Lobbed attacks (Winter Melon, Dusk Lobber, etc) and attacks that do splash damage (Coconut Cannon, Ice Bloom, Primal Potato Mine, etc) will bypass it entirely. Excavator Zombie uses the shovel to dig up plants and toss them approximately two tiles behind it. Excavator Zombie is also capable of tossing a plant off the lawn, when the plant is on the front most two tiles of the lawn. Some plants are unable to be affected by the shovel because they trigger even before he can use it on them. Against targets he cannot toss around, he will attack it with the shovel, which has the DPS of a basic zombie.
Strategies

Lobbed-shot and area-of-effect plants cannot be blocked by the shovel. Dandelion and Coconut Cannon can only damage Excavator Zombies with their splash damage. Bramble Bush is the only plant capable of removing the shovel.
Trivia
- It and the parasol are the only indestructible shields in the game.
- Coincidentally, both appear in Lost City.
- However, splash damage from Dandelion and Coconut Cannon could make the Excavator Zombie lose the shovel. This bug has been patched.
- If he lost his shovel, he would quickly move through almost all plants and eat the player's brains.
- As of 9.6.1, the shovel can now be removed by Bramble Bush, and the Excavator Zombie will eat plants normally instead of ignoring them now.
- If he lost his shovel, he would quickly move through almost all plants and eat the player's brains.
- It has a dirt or mud-like substance on it, yet it does not fall off the shovel when the Excavator Zombie holds it.
- It and Clamshell are the only objects that are both weapons and shields.
- His shovel can't be attracted by Magnet-shroom, due to the fact that it is made of gold, a non-magnetic metal.
- An animation of the shovel being taken away by Magnet-Shroom exists in the files though, meaning this wasn't always the case.
- However, in reality, gold is an extremely poor material for a shovel. A more suitable material would be iron, which is magnetic, or steel, which is an Iron-based alloy.
- The shovel is made out of gold probably to make Excavator Zombie a little more difficult to deal with, requiring the player to use lobbed-shot or area of effect plants to defeat him.
