- For other uses, see Magnet-shroom (disambiguation).
Magnet-shroom is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Magnet-shroom is a mushroom plant who attracts metallic objects from zombies, either massively reducing their health or negating their primary abilities.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Magnet-shroom has appeared in four games.
Origins
While the exact mushroom Magnet-shroom is based on is never mentioned or confirmed, his mushroom body bares a strong resemblance to the spotted cort (Cortinarius iodes), a small purple spotted species of agaric fungus in the family Cortinariaceae; while his head is based on a horseshoe magnet, a magnet made in the shape of a horseshoe.
History
Plants vs. Zombies
- Main article: Magnet-shroom (PvZ)
In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Magnet-shroom is the last area obtained mushroom obtained in the game.
Magnet-shroom costs 100 sun to plant and is able to steal metallic objects away from zombies, such as armor from zombies like Buckethead Zombie and Football Zombie, greatly reducing their health, or tools such as Digger Zombie's pickaxe or Pogo Zombie's pogo stick, making them no more hazardous than a standard zombie.
This metal stealing ability makes Magnet-shroom one of the most powerful supporting plants in the entire game. However Magnet-shroom requires a 10 second cooldown in-between object stealings, and also requires a Coffee Bean in levels taking place during the day, due to being a nocturnal mushroom.
He has an upgrade, Gold Magnet, which is a normal plant rather than a mushroom and and is only able to attract coins and diamonds for the player, making him a favorable plant choice for money farming strategies alongside Marigold.
Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (Archived content)
- Main article: Magnet Plant
While Magnet-shroom did not make an appearance in the Facebook exclusive Plants vs. Zombies Adventures due to the entire game taking place during the day and lacking a nocturnal mushroom mechanic, a functionally and visually similar plant named Magnet Plant appeared in his place.
Magnet Plant functioned near identically to Magnet-shroom, as he was able to steal magnetic objects from zombies in a 5x5 area around him, but requires cooldown in-between stealing and could be taken out in two simple bites.
Despite replacing Magnet-shroom, Magnet Plant's dropped seed packet reads "Magnet Shroom" before being picked up by the player, revealing that mushrooms were perhaps planned to have been plantable during the day during development. Concept art showing other mushrooms such as Puff-shroom further supports this theory.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Magnet-shroom (PvZ2)
In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Magnet-shroom is the last plant obtained in the Dark Ages. He retains his ability and sun cost from the first game, but is now able to stay awake in the day, with the drawback of having a longer recharge and cooldown.
Along with his supporting role of stealing a variety of metallic armor from zombies, Magnet-shroom can now act offensively as well, being able to instantly destroy a Punk Zombie by ripping his head off due to his copious metal piercings and his Plant Food effect having him attract up to 20 objects in his range and fling them ahead of him, dealing damage depending on the objects he throws.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)
- Main article: Magnet line
Magnet-shroom's latest appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the first plant in the Magnet line, evolving into Electromagnetic Mushroom and then into Magneto Mushroom. He attacked zombies by flinging his head at them and specialized in lowering zombie defense.
His active ability was Armor Breaker, which lowered the defense of all enemies for 2 turns and turned it into armor for himself, dealing damage based on his remaining armor when the 2 turns are up.
His soulmates were members of the Ice Pea line for an improved dodge chance, members of the Corn line for a rigid boost and members of the Coconut line and Tree line together for a defense boost.

Trivia
- Before he was introduced into Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, there was a beta design for him created. These beta designs were created before the Dark Ages were created, and were thus scrapped when an "official" Plants vs. Zombies 2 Magnet-shroom was released.
