Bonk Choy is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Bonk Choy is a melee attacker who attacks zombies by rapidly punching them with leafy fists.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Bonk Choy has appeared in eight games.
Origins
Bonk Choy is based on the bok choy, a type of Chinese cabbage. Its name derives from bok choy and bonk, one of the onomatopoeic words usually used to define punching sounds.
Bonk Choy's official Chinese name is 菜问, which is likely based on Yip Man (叶问), Bruce Lee's teacher.
History
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Bonk Choy (PvZ2)
Bonk Choy's first appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 2, unlocked after beating Day 13 of Ancient Egypt. Bonk Choy rapidly punches zombies one tile ahead of him (or behind if there are zombies behind him), dealing 15 damage per punch.
He is a member of the Enforce-mint family, who increases Bonk Choy's punch damage by 75 and his Plant Food damage by 345 per tick while he is on the lawn while his Plant Food effect has him rapidly punch in a 3x3 area, dealing 1500 damage over a few seconds.
Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition (China only) (Archived content)
- Main article: Bonk Choy (PvZ: EE)
Bonk Choy was brought into Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition, a Chinese-only version of Plants vs. Zombies as a premium plant. Like his Plants vs. Zombies 2 counterpart, Bonk Choy rapidly punched zombies ahead or behind of him, being able to punch zombies two tiles ahead of him rather than just one.
Due to a lack of Plant Food in this game, Bonk Choy instead had the chance to rapidly punch in a 3x3 area as a special attack, like his Plant Food effect in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
Garden Warfare series and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Main article: Bonk Choy (Spawnable)
Bonk Choy appears in all the shooter games as a Potted Plant. Like the main games, Bonk Choy attacks zombies by punching them twice in a row. In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, he has two event variants, the Boo Choy and Basket Choy, who have no differences other than the name.
Garden Warfare 2 also has a legendary version obtained from Rux, the Monk Choy. Monk Choy has more health and deals more damage than a normal Bonk Choy. Five Monk Choys can be bought from Rux at a time when available.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)
- Main article: Choy line
Bonk Choy next appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Choy line, evolving from Choy Ben and evolving into Tai Choy. His line specialized in stunning enemies and attacked by punching.
His active ability was Knock out! which had him rush to the closest enemy in his lane and attack all the enemies on that column, which stunned them for two turns while his passive ability was Body Mastery, which simply gave Bonk Choy an extra 528 in his dodge stat and an extra 188 in his critical stat.
His soulmates were members of the Nut line for a better chance to avoid attacks and either members of the Clover line or members of the Coffee line and Cactus lines together for a boost to his defense.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
- Main article: Bonk Choy (PvZH)
Bonk Choy returns in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, here as a Premium Uncommon. He is a Leafy plant in the Mega-Grow class costing 1 and has 2/1. When played, he will give himself an additional 1 for that turn, thus making him a 31/ the first turn he is on the field.
Grass Knuckles is the Mega-Grow/Guardian Plant Hero and is based off a Bonk Choy. His strong suit is buffing the stats of cards while keeping them defended with tankier defensive cards, as well as increasing the stats of cards with powerful traits, such as the face-attacking Bullseye and the damage reducing Armored.
His signature Superpower is Power Pummel, which deals 2 damage in all ground lanes while his other superpowers are Holo-Flora, Time to Shine, and Root Wall.
- Main article: Bonk Choy (PvZ3)
Bonk Choy's latest appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as a Common Hot type Scrapper plant in the Pre-2021 version of the game. He once again attacks with rapid punches at zombies ahead and behind him, and was is one of the four main characters in the game's story, alongside Peashooter, Sunflower, and Wall-Nut.
His Plant Food effect was called Fists of Fury and, like his Plant Food ability in Plants vs. Zombies 2, allowed him to rapidly punch in a 3x3 area around him dealing heavy damage to any zombie in his fists' path, while his Tacobility was called Flaming Fists and let Bonk Choy fire out short-ranged fireballs whenever he punches, these fireballs are able to hit multiple zombies at a time.
In the Post-2021 version of the game he looses his Hot typing and unlockable rarity and is first usable in the early Neighborville levels.
