Cherry Bomb is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.

Cherry Bombs are explosive plants who explode in a 3x3 area, dealing heavy damage to any unlucky Zombies in their range. Cherry Bomb is often the first explosive plant the player receives in most games.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Cherry Bomb has appeared in seven games.

Origins

Cherry bomb, an explodonating firework

Cherry Bomb is based on the cherry, a term for the fruit of plants belonging to the genus Prunus. They are named after the real life cherry bomb, a type of spherically-shaped firework.

In the first game, an explosion cloud with the onomatopoeia "POWIE!!" (or "powie!!" depending on the version) will appear, while in the second game, the cloud will spell "CHA-BOOF!" instead.

Their name refers to the fact that they are a cherry plant as well as a bomb. Their name could also be a reference to the song "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways.

The word "Explodonate" they usually say is a pun of the word explosion and detonate.

History

Plants vs. Zombies

Cherry Bomb1.png

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Cherry Bomb is the third plant obtained in the game. When planted, Cherry Bomb will instantly explode in a 3x3 area, dealing massive damage to every zombie hit by the blast. This damage is enough to destroy every zombie in the game except for Gargantuars and Dr. Zomboss' zombot (if hacked into a level with one.) This explosion was not considered fire damage, meaning it would not thaw out frozen zombies nor remove ice trails made from Zomboni.

They can also target submerged Snorkel Zombies, flying Balloon Zombies, digging Digger Zombies, and ladders placed by Ladder Zombies, which usually require other plants to counter them.

Cherry Bomb next appears in PopCap's ill-fated Facebook game Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, once again being an explosive plant that deals heavy damage. Due to the path system, Cherry Bomb's range has been buffed to a 7x7 area.

If a zombie reached the end of the player's path in Road Trip mode or a server-caused Zombie Sneak Attack, the player could buy a Cherry Bomb for 250 gems to destroy the zombies, even if the player hadn't unlocked Cherry Bomb yet.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Cherry Bomb is the last plant obtained in Pirate Seas, having the same ability as they did in the first game, with the only differences being a faster recharge and their explosion now being considered fire damage.

They are a member of the Bombard-mint family, dealing an additional 2400 damage when he is on the field.

Cherry Bomb has two similar premium counterparts, Grapeshot and Bombegranate. The former also releases grapes that bounce around the field dealing additional damage while the latter leaves explosive seeds that deal additional damage if a zombie steps on them. Both plants outclass them because they include multiple abilities while keeping the same base cost.

In the Chinese version, he is one of the few Instant-use plants that have a costume and level upgrades, giving the player 25 sun per zombie that they destroyed while leveling up lets him create a small cherry which acts like a Potato Mine. Before version 1.8, they were the only premium plant in the game, costing around 3 USD or RMB 30 worth of gems.

Cherry Bomb reappears in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare as the Boss Mode ability Cherry Strike. In this game, they cost 250 sun and will be sent down onto a selected location, acting similar to the Garlic Drone's Corn Strike, but is more spread out. Each Cherry Bomb can deal up to 70 damage to a zombie and has a 45 second recharge.

Cherry Bomb appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the first plant in the Bomb line, evolving into Saturn Peach Bomb and then Walnut Bomb. Oddly enough, Cherry Bomb didn't attack by exploding, but rather ramming into their enemies.

Their active ability was Boom!, which rushes to the first enemy in their lane to deal damage in a 3x3 area.

Their soulmates were members of the Spray Mushroom line for a health boost, members of the Magnet line for a rigid boost, and members of the Stump line and Cactus lines for a defense boost.

Cherry Bomb also appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a Berry Trick in the PvZH Kabloom Icon.pngKabloom class. They cost 6SunPvZH.png and deal 4 damage to zombies in the selected lane and the lanes adjacent to it.

Similar cards include Lava Guava and Kernel Corn as Lava Guava, while dealing only 2 damage, is also 1SunPvZH.png cheaper and can replace an environment while Kernel Corn also supplies a plant on the field and deals 4 damage to every zombie on the board at the cost of costing 2SunPvZH.png more.

Plants vs. Zombies 3

Cherry Bomb's most recent appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3. However, they are closer to a power-up rather than an actual plant, being usable once per level. Like the previous games however, they deal heavy damage in a 3x3 area and can be planted anywhere due to their status as a power-up, including on tiles that are occupied by plants. The Jubilee Nightclub can be upgraded to in turn upgrade Cherry Bomb's damage.
