Starfruit is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Starfruit shoots star projectiles in five different directions, including above, below, and behind himself.
Starfruit in games is portrayed as rather egotistical, most especially in Plants vs. Zombies 3 where he perceives himself to be the most widely admired plant amongst his peers, with a "destiny" for "stardom". He is also said to be rather lazy, with his Plants vs. Zombies 2 entry stating that he enjoys numerous alternate forms of transportation and Angel Starfruit claiming that he is too lazy to even rotate his body to improve his attack range.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Starfruit has appeared in four games.
Origins
Starfruit is based on the real life fruit of the same name, also known as the carambola, which belongs to the plant of the same name (Averrhoa carambola), a species of woody plant in the family Oxalidaceae.
The star in his name refers to the fact that he is star shaped and shoots stars in five directions, and the fruit in his name refers to the fact that he is a fruit.
History
Plants vs. Zombies

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as Plants vs. Zombies: Journey to the West, a Chinese spin-off, Starfruit is unlocked after beating Level 4-6.
He attacks by firing stars in 5 directions slowly, one up, one down, one to the upper right, one to the lower right and one behind him. The stars he fires deal as much damage as a pea but are unable to be lit by Torchwood.
He normally costs 125 sun but costs 175 with a much slower recharge in Versus Mode. There is a mini-game based on him, Seeing Stars, which involves putting Starfruits in a star shape on a lawn.
Oddly enough, in Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition and Plants vs. Zombies Social Edition, Starfruit was replaced by a plant named Future Star who functioned identically to Starfruit with the only noticeable differences being the color of both the projectiles and the plant itself.
Future Star advertised a milk brand in China also named "Future Star", this is a weird case in Social Edition as other advertisement plants in the game are their own separate plants who didn't replace what they were based off of.
Plants vs. Zombies 2

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Starfruit is a seed packet premium plant, costing 200 seed packets. In this game, he costs 150 sun rather than 125 but his projectiles move much faster compared to his appearance in Plants vs. Zombies. Otherwise, Starfruit functions identically to how he did in the first game.
Starfruit is also a member of Appease-mint's mint family, who lets his stars deal an additional 175 damage while he is on the field while his Plant Food effect has him shoot ten giant stars in his five directions, dealing 80 damage per star.
The Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 features a plant named Angel Starfruit, who is based off Starfruit. Angel Starfruit is a legendary rarity event plant who was introduced for 2016 Children's Day event.
She costs 75 more sun than Starfruit (225 total) and similarly fires in five different directions at once. But unlike Starfruit, Angel Starfruit is able to rotate her entire body 72°, essentially flipping the directions she fires in horizontally.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Starfruit returns in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as Shooting Starfruit, a Galactic Legendary plant in the 
Smarty class. He has no traits and he costs 5

While he has low stats, his ability allows him to attack all five lanes on the board, which can deal up to 10 damage to the Zombie Hero if all lanes are unoccupied. He is considered one of the mascots for Galactic Gardens card set alongside Supernova Gargantuar.
Plants vs. Zombies 3

Starfruit's latest appearance is in the pre-2021 version of Plants vs. Zombies 3, retaining the same role and abilities as the other tower defense games.
He was obtainable after beating Floor 6 of the Devour Tower and his seed packets were more likely to appear in Green Screens Theater breakout levels.
His Plant Food ability was called Starburst and let him rapidly fire a barrage of stars in 5 directions while his Tacobility was called Pointed Stars and let him fire faster, as well as having his projectiles pierce through multiple zombies.
