Bamboo shoot is a recurring name within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. The Bamboo Shoots throughout the series do many different things depending on the game.
However, the most recurring plant by the name of Bamboo Shoot is one that appears in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. This Bamboo Shoot attacks zombies by firing exploding projectiles out of its head.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, a plant named Bamboo Shoot has appeared in five games.
Origins
Bamboo Shoot is based on the bamboo, an evergreen perennial flowering plant in the subfamily Bambuseae of the grass family Poaceae.
The name itself is a pun on "bamboo shoot", the edible shoot of many bamboo species; with the "shoot" part referring to Bamboo Shoot's attack method.
History
Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (Archived content)

A plant by the name of Bamboo Shoot first appeared in PopCap's ill-fated Facebook game Plants vs. Zombies Adventures. This Bamboo Shoot was a stalk of bamboo that lobbed shells at zombies which exploded upon impact, dealing heavy damage. He costed 175 sun, attacked in a 5x5 area around him, and was unlocked after reclaiming The Bamboo Lot.
He had a VIP variant named Bamboom, who fired spiked bombs at zombies. These bombs were more powerful than the standard Bamboo Shells had dealt enough damage to instantly defeat a Conehead Zombie upon direct impact. Bamboom was the final VIP plant released before the closure of Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.
Plants vs. Zombies 2 (Chinese version)

Another plant named Bamboo Shoot would later appear in the Chinese version of Plants vs Zombies 2 as one of the four plants unlocked in the first Chinese exclusive area, Kongfu World, alongside Resistant Radish, Fire Gourd, and Peach.
Unlike the Bamboo Shoot in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, this plant had a far different design (resembling the actual shoot of the bamboo) well as a different method of attack. When a zombie is within four tiles in front of Bamboo Shoot, he will retreat into the ground and start attacking by protruding sharp bamboo shoot spires from the ground dealing damage to all zombies in the four tiles in front of him.
Much like Spikeweed, Bamboo Shoot cannot be eaten by zombies as he attacks from below, however, any rolling zombie can run over him, destroying him in the process. Gargantuars are also able to destroy the Bamboo Shoot by crushing his starting point. Unlike Spikeweed, however, Bamboo Shoot cannot be planted on the boarding planks in Pirate Seas as his is buried into the ground.
Garden Warfare series

Bamboo Shoot from Plants vs. Zombies Adventures would return in the Garden Warfare series as a spawnable potted plant introduced to the original Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare in the Zomboss Down DLC.
He attacks by firing bamboo shoots into the air, these bamboo shoots will then begin to rain down intensively in a medium area, doing massive damage to any zombie approaching. Bamboo Shoot is able to fire these bamboo shoots from quite a long rage, but has considerably low health compared to other potted plants, and very high visibility when attacking on maps taking place at night.
In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Bamboo Shoots receives a zombie bot counterpart in the form of Uplink Bot, who is functionally identical in ability but rather then firing multiple smaller projectiles, instead summons one large attack.
Bamboo Shoot also receives both a Feastivus variant named the Candy Cane Shoot, and a Springening variant named the Bunnyboo Shoot. Both function identically to the default Bamboo Shoot, and are only available during their respective events in their respective sticker packs.
Plants vs. Zombies 3 (Archived content)

In the Pre-2021 version of Plants vs. Zombies 3, a plant named Bamboo Shoots was the first new plant introduced. Similarly to the Bamboo Shoot in Adventures, Bamboo Shoots fired high damaging explosive projectiles at zombies. But these projectiles were fired straight ahead rather than lobbed.
Bamboo Shoots were a Rare plant given to the player during a tutorial at the beginning of the game teaching the player about, and countering, armored zombies which took reduced damage from projectiles fired from plants.
Bamboo Shoots' Plant Food effect was named Bamboom which fired a massive missile that exploded in a 3x3 area while their Tacobility was named Shrapnel, which made their missiles explode into fragments that deal damage to zombies near the initial target.

Trivia
- Bamboo Shoot from Plants vs. Zombies Adventures was intended to return in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a plant unlocked on Big Wave Beach and a controllable tap-to-attack plant, but was replaced with the functionally identical Banana Launcher, due to there not being a good visual difference between Bamboo Shoot recharging its projectile and being ready to attack.
- Bamboo Shoot from the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 was planned to make an appearance in the Chinese exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, where he would attack all zombies three tiles ahead of him. It is unknown why Bamboo Shoot's appearance in this game was scrapped.
