Torchwood is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. While not being a pea himself, Torchwood's main role is boosting the power of peashooting plants by lighting them on fire, increasing their damage output.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Torchwood has appeared in six games.

Origins

TreeStump.jpg

Although there is a flowering plant family known as torchwood (Burseraceae), which includes frankincense and myrrh, the name may also be a reference to the eponymous organization in the Doctor Who spin-off series. The torch in his name refers to the fact that fire comes out of his head, somewhat like a torch, and the wood refers to the fact that he is made of wood, as he is a tree plant.

History

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Torchwood is unlocked after beating Level 3-7. He ignites any Peas that go past him, making them deal double damage with splash damage.

In fog levels, he can remove fog in a 3x3 area, making him an alternative to Plantern if the player wishes to use pea strategies in those levels.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Torchwood makes a return in Plants vs. Zombies 2, this time as a Premium plant and a member of the Appease-mint family. Following the 7.6.1 update, Torchwood has received massive changes to make them more viable.

Torchwood still ignites peas like the first game (though these peas no longer have splash damage), but now has more health, deals minor damage to zombies eating him, and explodes to release line-wide fire damage when eaten. The Chinese version has none of these buffs in place.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Torchwood makes multiple appearances in the shooter games, as both a boss and in Garden Warfare 2, a playable character.

In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 only, Torchwood appears as a playable character as a reward for beating the Trials of Eternity and using 75 Rainbow Stars. He has the highest health out of any main class in the game with 275 and their primary weapon is similar to the All-Star's

His model is simply a smaller version of Giga Torchwood's and like Hover-Goat 3000, he simply has three alternate costumes and no actual variants.

Boss

A boss variant, Giga Torchwood, appears in both Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. He attacks with a barrage of fire-based attacks such as a fire gatling and fire breath. He can also go Berzerk, increasing the damage of all his attacks. In Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, his moveset has been merged with Big Stump, giving his their vacuum ability.

His super wave in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 gives him backup from Fire variants on the plants side while his super wave in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville requires the zombies to throw water balloons at him to cool him down when he goes berzerk.

Torchwood next appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Stump line, evolving from Elderwood and evolving into Wispywood. He attacked zombies by firing blue flames at them.

His active ability was Firewall, which absorbed 527 worth of damage for the next three hits and lasted three turns while his passive ability was Spirit Igniter, which increased the damage of all plants in his lane by +74 for three turns at the start of each wave.
