But you can just call me Crazy Dave.
Fume-shroom has different capitalization or spelling depending on what game it is in. When editing, use the term used in the game in question.
Puff-shroom, bless 'im, told me about this great opportunity blasting zombies. Now I really feel like I'm making a difference.

For other uses, see Fume-shroom (disambiguation).

Fume-shroom is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Fume-shroom is a mushroom which attacks zombies by firing strong fumes at them. In most games, fumes fired by Fume-shroom are able to pierce through multiple zombies, as well as through various zombie armor.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Fume-shroom has appeared in seven games.

Origins

CortinariusArcheri.jpg

The exact mushroom Fume-shroom is based on is never explicitly stated, however the mushroom Fume-shroom most resembles is the emperor webcap (Cortinarius archeri), a species of mushroom in the genus Cortinarius, due to its purple color and general large size.

His name refers to how it both shoots purple fumes that passes through zombies, and is a mushroom.

History

Plants vs. Zombies

Fume-shroom1.png

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Fume-shroom is unlocked after beating Level 2-2. He attacks zombies by firing fume clouds ahead of them, capable of hitting every zombie caught in the fumes and bypassing shields.

Being a mushroom, he requires Coffee Bean to be usable in Day, Pool, and Roof levels.

Gloom-shroom

Fume-shroom has an upgrade, Gloom-shroom, costing $7500 to buy at Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies. Gloom-shroom costs 150 sun to plant, and can only be planted on Fume-shroom, and changes his range to be able to attack in all directions around him, albeit in a limited 3x3 area, dealing heavy damage to all zombies in his range. Gloom-shroom's heavy damage output and range makes them a common plant used in Survival: Endless.

Icy Fume-shroomSE.png

In the now defunct Chinese exclusive game Plants vs. Zombies: Social Edition, there was a premium plant based on Fume-shroom named Icy Fume-shroom.

Icy Fume-shroom costed 200 sun and attacked in the same way as Fume-shroom, dealing piercing damage to all zombies within its range. Unlike Fume-shroom however, Icy Fume-shroom could also slow zombies down, essentially being Fume-shroom's own version of Snow Pea or Winter Melon.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Fume-shroom2.png

Fume-shroom reappears in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a counter to the Jester Zombie encountered in the Dark Ages world.

He returns with the same attack and functionality as in Plants vs. Zombies, but due to the lack of a nocturnal gimmick, Fume-shroom no longer requires a Coffee Bean to be planted in day levels, and thus costs 125 sun rather than 75. He also deals more damage in this game, dealing 40 damage rather than 20. A Witch Hazel (Level 7 and above) would turn a random zombie to more Fume-shrooms.

He is a member of the Ail-mint family, dealing an extra 120 damage while she is on the lawn and his Plant Food effect has him release a very huge burst of fumes, dealing 1,500 damage and pushing zombies back.

Garden Warfare series and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Fume-shroom appears in all the shooter games as a Potted Plant, with Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville being his latest appearance.

Like the main games, he attacks with acidic bubbles that go through multiple zombies at close range, including armor, meaning he is able to directly damage Coffin Zombies and Outhouse Zombies, even if they're still in their armor.

Goop-shroomGW1.png

Another plant, the Goop-shroom, is based off of Fume-shroom, sharing the same recolored model as Fume-shroom, with their select icon in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare even being a recolored version of Fume-shroom's design in Plants vs. Zombies.

Instead of shooting piercing bubbles, Goop-shroom instead attacks nearby zombies by gooping them, slowing them down and continuously damaging them foe the duration of the goop attack.

Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)

Fume-shroom appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the last plant as the 3rd Tier of the Spray Mushroom line, evolving from Scaredy-shroom, who itself evolves from Puff-shroom.

His active ability was Spore Spray, which dealt damage to all enemies in their lane while his passive abilities were Necrotoxin, which gives Spore Spray a chance to poison enemies for 3 turns, and Microbial Corrosion, which let his attacks ignore 120 HP worth of armor, an effect that was doubled if the enemy was poisoned.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Fume-Shroom's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as an Uncommon Premium plant in the PvZH Solar Icon.pngSolar class. He costs 2SunPvZH.png, has 2StrengthPvZH.png/1HeartPvZH.png, the PvZH Strikethrough Icon.pngStrikethrough trait, and is a member of the Mushroom tribe.

Strangely enough, Fume-Shroom in this game has a thin design compared to the rest of the series.

Trivia

Fume-shroom AS Beta Design.png
  • Fume-shroom had an old design that was later changed in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. This was likely scrapped due to the Dark Ages releasing an official PvZ2-based design.
  • Currently Plants vs. Zombies 3 is the only game to include Gloom-shroom but not Fume-shroom.
