Witch Hazel is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Witch Hazels use magic to transform zombies into Mushrooms, usually Puff-shrooms.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Witch Hazel has appeared in three games.

Origins

A real life example of witch-hazel, the plant Witch Hazel is based on

Witch Hazel is based on the plant "witch-hazel". Her name is a portmanteau of "witch-hazel," the real-life plant she is based on, and "witch," hence her appearance. She shares the same name as the Looney Tunes character, Witch Hazel.

Her description in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes is a reference to the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where a group of villagers are trying to figure out if a woman is a witch. During the conversation, a villager suggests to build a bridge out of the woman, to see if she is made of wood and is, therefore, a witch.

History

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Witch Hazel is first introduced in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as a Premium plant. Similar to Electric Blueberry and Caulipower, they target a random zombie on the board to activate their ability, in Witch Hazel's case, turning them into a Puff-shroom (or a Fume-shroom if they're level 7 or over) before having to recharge for an extended period of time. Their Plant Food instead turns a random zombie into a Toadstool.

Witch Hazel specifically prioritizes Wizard Zombies, thus serving as a counter to them.

She is a member of the Enchant-mint family, who decreases her transformation rate to 9-10 seconds, increases her damage by 1,800, her Plant Food effect's damage by 3,000, makes the zombies she's transformed into level 10 plants, turns zombies into Fume-shrooms rather than Puff-shrooms (Toadstools rather than Fume-shrooms at level 7 or higher), and her plant food effect turn zombies into Hypno-shrooms if she's level 7 or higher while he is on the field.

Witch Hazel appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Magic line, evolving from Magic-shroom and evolving into Pumpkin Witch. She attacked zombies by firing a red laser at them.

Her active ability was Hat Trick, which locked two enemies in statis for 2 turns, making them unable to be attacked or attack. Her passive ability was Spell Enchantment, which had her gain an 40% boost to her attack after each Hat Trick for 3 turns.

Her soulmates were members of the Flame line for a health boost, members of the Magnet line for a damage boost, and members of the Citron line and Energy Bean lines together for a boost to her critical hit chance.

Witch Hazel's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as an Event plant. Here, she costs 4SunPvZH.png and has 3HeartPvZH.png as a Flower plant in the PvZH Smarty Icon.pngSmarty class.

At the end of every turn, she destroys a random zombie on the board and turns them into a Puff-Shroom. This effect works even if the Puff-Shroom can't be created, and the zombie will simply be destroyed with no Puff-Shroom created.

Trivia

  • According to the developers in a Live from PopCap episode, she is the arch-nemesis of the Wizard Zombie. This is most likely because both are sorcerers that can transform others.
