Chomper is a major recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Chomper is a Venus flytrap-like plant that is able to eat zombies, which in most cases is able to instantly defeat them.

Chomper is also frequently given a dog-like behavior and slobbish nature, with Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville even referring to Chomper as "the plant equivalent of a family dog".

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Chomper has appeared in seven games, with a scrapped planned appearance in a Chinese spin-off.

Origins

AudreyII feat.jpg

Chomper is based on the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States.

Chomper also has a design similar to Audrey II's from the film Little Shop of Horrors. This is referenced in Chomper's almanac entry in the original Plants vs. Zombies which reveals that Chomper had a job as Audrey II's stunt double.

Chomper's name is related to the verb chomp, meaning the act of chewing and munching something loudly or heavily, referring to Chomper's ability to eat zombies.

History

Plants vs. Zombies

Chomper1.png

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games, Chomper is one of the last plants obtained in the Day area, being unlocked by beating Level 1-7.

Chomper costs 150 sun and attacks by eating zombies whole, instantly defeating any zombie in the tile in front of him, albeit one at a time. However when eating a zombie, he needs to chew the zombie for a short amount of time, which leaves him vulnerable to attacks.

In the now defunct Chinese exclusive games Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition and Plants vs. Zombies Social Edition, Chomper had a premium plant based on him named the Super Chomper which was created in conjunction with a Chinese dairy company to promote a plant lactic acid based beverage.

Super Chomper functioned exactly like Chomper, but was able to eat more zombies at a time, a total of five per chomp, and chew zombies more quickly, taking 15 seconds to chew as opposed to Chomper's 42 seconds.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Chomper would make a long awaited return in Plants vs. Zombies 2, as a premium plant tied to the Big Wave Beach Part 1 teaser Piñata Parties.

He still costs 150 sun and attacks the same way he does in the the first game, eating zombies whole and biting zombies that are unable to be eaten, however his chewing time is much faster than in the first game, he can eat 2 zombies before having to chew and his bite attack now deals more damage.

In addition to eating zombies, Chomper is now able to bite obstacles such as Tombstones, Surfboards, and Octopi, dealing the same amount of damage to them as he does to zombies. He is also a member of Enforce-mint family and is able to be boosted by Enforce-mint to further reduce his chewing time.

Garden Warfare games

In the Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare series of shooter games, Chomper serves as the melee class of the plant team, dealing heavy damage to zombies by biting them at close range. Due to the nature of Chomper's attack, he neither has an ammo clip, nor does he need to reload.

Chomper also retains his ability of eating zombies whole from previous games by attacking them behind, though like in previous appearances this leaves him vulnerable to attacks and renders him unable to use his abilities.

Chomper, as with the other playable classes in the Garden Warfare series, also has numerous Character variants based on him, each having their own traits which differentiates them from the standard base character.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Chomper also reappears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a Super-Rare member of the PvZH Solar Icon.pngSolar class. Chomper costs 4SunPvZH.png, has 2StrengthPvZH.png and 2HeartPvZH.png and is one of the few members of the Flytrap tribe. When played Chomper will destroy any zombie with less than 3StrengthPvZH.png in its lane.

ChompzillaH.png

There is also a Plant hero based on Chomper named Chompzilla, who leads the PvZH Mega-Grow Icon.pngMega-Grow and PvZH Solar Icon.pngSolar classes. Her strong suit lies in healing, powerful plant fighters and tricks that instantly destroy zombies.

One interesting note is that Chompzilla is female, while in previous games, Chomper has been consistently male. This is important to note as Chompzilla would serve as one of the primary factors to Chomper being referred to as female in more recent installments of the Plants vs. Zombies franchise.

Three-Headed ChomperH.png

There is also a Legendary card that is based on Chomper named Three-Headed Chomper, it is a member of the PvZH Solar Icon.pngSolar class, has 6StrengthPvZH.png and 6HeartPvZH.png and costs 6SunPvZH.png. It is part of the Flytrap tribe, and its ability lets it destroy every zombie in its lane and nearby lanes at the end of turn, so long as it survives until then.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Main article: Chomper (PvZ: BfN)
ChomperBfN.png

Chomper reappears in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville as an PvZ BfN Attack Class Icon.png Attack class for the plant team. Chomper retains the melee class role for the plants, and can attack zombies by biting them at close range like in the Garden Warfare games.

Chomper has also received a secondary ranged weapon named the "Slobber Shot", activated by zooming in with the primary weapon, which allows Chomper to deal damage to far off opponents through a mean that isn't an ability.

Unlike in the Garden Warfare games however, Chomper is no longer able to instantly defeat opponents by walking behind them and eating them whole. Chomper can still, however, eat zombies whole when ambushing them with the Burrow ability.

Chomper also lacks any Character variants in this game, but instead has a large number of character upgrades, some of which grant abilities to both Chomper's primary and secondary weapons as well as abilities.

Plants vs. Zombies 3

Chomper3.png

Chomper's latest appearance is in the sequel game Plants vs. Zombies 3 as an Epic rarity Melee plant, where she costs 5 sun and retains her previous tower defense game appearances' ability of eating zombies whole, and biting any zombie unable to be swallowed.

Chomper is also given a Tacobility similar to her Burrow ability in the various shooter games she's appeared in, which allows her hide underground while she is chewing and ambushing zombies when they walk above her.

She is able to be unlocked and upgraded via Seed packets which are commonly dropped in Mulchburger Fast Food breakout battles.

Trivia

  • No matter what type of zombie Chomper eats, the arm hanging out of its mouth is an arm of a regular Zombie (wearing a brown coat sleeve).

  • Chomper has a scrapped design meant to be used in the Chinese exclusive turn-based RPG Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. It is unknown why Chomper was scrapped from appearing in the game.
    • This design would later be touched-up and reused for Chomper's appearance in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
    • The scrapped design was oddly used in Plants vs. Zombies 2, featuring in ads related to leveling up, it is unknown why this design was used rather than the actual in-game design for the ads.
