All-Star is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. All-Star has had his abilities and role change between games, from being simply a zombie with high health to a playable character.

He is based off a traditional American football player, his original name having "football" in it and wearing football armor. Despite this, his Plants vs. Zombies entry as well as Plants vs. Zombies Heroes and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville's descriptions reveal he doesn't know what a football actually is.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, All-Star has appeared in nine games.

History

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Football Zombie first appears in Level 2-6, the eight zombie encountered in Adventure Mode. Here he has high health (the helmet absorbing 1,400 damage) and fast speed. He is meant to be initially countered with Hypno-shroom, unlocked in the previous level and can be crippled with Magnet-shroom who is unlocked later and is able to pull his helmet off.

He costs 175 sun to use in I, Zombie while he costs 150 brains in Versus Mode.

Due to web version only reaching Level 2-4, instances of Gargantuars are replaced by a giga variant of Football Zombie, the Giga-Football Zombie. Giga-Football Zombie only appears in the version's Survival Mode and Vasebreaker, having the exact same health as a Gargantuar but with Football Zombie's speed. While Giga-Football Zombie can provide to be quite a challenge to defeat, due to being a retextured Football Zombie, a Chomper can instantly destroy one with no assistance.

Oddly enough, Football Zombie does not appear in this version, due to where the version ends, though Giga-Football Zombie is misnamed as Football Zombie in-game.

Football Zombie made a reappearance in PopCap's ill-fated Facebook game Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, retaining the same role as the previous game. Football Zombies are first encountered in U of Z and reappear in certain levels of later maps. Like the first game, Football Zombie has a weakness to magnets, in this case, Magnet Plant, who can take his helmet.

He costs 3,000 coins to attack a neighbor and 1,500 coins and 8 minutes to train in Brainball.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

All-Star Zombie2.png

Following All-Star's introduction into the Garden Warfare series, Football Zombie returned in the form of All-Star Zombie in Modern Day. Here his ability has been drastically changed, starting his assault on the lawn by charging towards the plants, instantly destroying the first one he runs into and kicking any Super-Fan Imps in his way. After tackling the plant, he will simply act like a normal zombie.

His health has been lowered to 1,100 damage, but Magnet-shroom can no longer remove his helmet. He also has an achievement related to him, You're an All-Star?, obtained if no All-Star Zombie is able to tackle a plant in a level.

Garden Warfare series

All-Star has a prominent role in the Garden Warfare series of shooter games, being a tank class with high health and having infinite ammo in his Football Cannon, though it will overheat if used for too long.

All-Star's main purpose, as stated in his stickerbook entry, is to be on the front lines, two of his abilities being close range heavy hitting attacks, having a grand 200 health and being able to provide cover for allies with the Dummy Shield. With his Imp Punt ability, he can launch an explosive Imp in a straight direction to inflict maximum damage that takes down multiple plants, but only in a close rage.

As with the other playable classes in the Garden Warfare series, he has numerous character variants based on him, each having their own traits which differentiates them from the standard base character. Garden Warfare is the game that first had "Football Zombie" be referred to as All-Star or All-Star Zombie.

Giga-Football Zombie also returns in these games, appearing as either Berserker or Blitzer, depending on the game, during special Garden Ops waves. These zombies attack only with Sprint Tackles and the occasional Zombie Hurt, making them a major threat to plant players. Oddly enough, they count as All-Stars when doing a "Vanquish All-Stars" quest.

Football Zombie appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as a zombie appearing in the American Suburbs.

Unlike other early game zombies in the American Suburbs, he could throw footballs at the plants, making him a threat even when far away, and his skill was to kick a football into the sky which landed on a random plant, dealing damage to them.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

All-Star Zombie also appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, as a Premium Super-Rare in the PvZH Hearty Icon.pngHearty class. He is a Sports Zombie who costs 5BrainPvZH.png and has 4StrengthPvZH.png/6HeartPvZH.png.

Along with those stats, All-Star Zombie also has both the PvZH Armored Icon.pngArmored 1 and PvZH Frenzy Icon.pngFrenzy traits naturally.

Before he was renamed to All-Star Zombie, this game was the latest game in the series to use the original name of "Football Zombie".

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

All-Star once again appears in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. He is a PvZ BfN Defend Class Icon.png Defend class who specializes in defending the rest of the team, either with his Dummy Shield (which has been changed to provide a red shield that creates a force field to protect getting damaged) or with his Football Cannon.

Unlike in the Garden Warfare series, All-Star no longer has any character variants, but instead has a large number of character upgrades, some of which grant abilities to All-Star's primary weapon and abilities.

Plants vs. Zombies 3

All-Star Zombie's latest reappearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as a Earthy Minion to Ballpark Frank. Like Plants vs. Zombies 2, he tackles the first plant he runs into for heavy damage and now can kick any type of Imp ahead of him.

He is warned as an Armored, Fast, and Crushing threat.
