Versus Mode in action

Versus Mode is a two-player game mode featured in the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo DS versions of Plants vs. Zombies. This mode is unlocked on the Nintendo DS version once the player has reached Level 2-1. The goal for the zombies lies in overwhelming the house and eating the player's brains, while the plants must shoot down three of the Target Zombies lined up on the back row of the zombies' starting line. The farther the player progresses in the Adventure Mode, the more plants and zombies become available for this game mode.

This mode introduces three new zombies, the Target Zombies, the Trash Can Zombies, and the Zombie Gravestones. Brains also feature as the zombie's equivalent to sun. It is the first mode where Bungee Zombies can steal Grave Busters and the second where Gargantuars, Zombonis, and Catapult Zombies can crush them.

Gameplay

The gameplay is much like any other mode. On the plants' side, the player must gather sun to plant plants and kill the zombies, while the zombies must build up brains to raise zombies to invade the house. Both sides will have one producer (the plants will have a Sunflower, and zombies will have Zombie Gravestone) and five plants or zombies. The plants control six of the nine columns, while the zombies will only control three. Sun will fall on any of the plant's six columns like any other mode, and brains will fall on any of the zombies' three at the same rate. The menu lets you choose either the plants or the zombies. The picture of each side will then change to hold the Xbox 360/PS3 controller (or a DSi) in some way (The Sunflower will grab it with its leaves in a casual stance while the Zombie will try to eat it). Once both sides have chosen, three modes are available, Quick Play, Custom Battle, and Random Battle.

Quick Play

Quick Play's gimmick is that both sides use predetermined units. The plants will always have Sunflower, Peashooter, Potato Mine, Wall-nut, Jalapeno, and Squash. The zombies will always have Zombie Gravestone, Zombie, Trash Can Zombie, Conehead Zombie, Football Zombie, and Flag Zombie.

Custom Battle

Custom Battle lets each side choose what plants or zombies they want. Before the game begins, each player chooses one plant or zombie at a time, alternating between the plants and zombies. Both must choose five of the six slots (the first slot is always the sun/brain producer). Some plants and zombies will cost different from other levels and I, Zombie.

Random Battle

Random Battle, true to its name, gives both sides five randomly selected plants or zombies, with the first slot for both remaining as Sunflower and Zombie Gravestone.

Sudden Death

Sudden Death will appear in any game type above after five minutes have elapsed. When Sudden Death occurs, Sunflowers and Zombie Gravestones will become unavailable to build, with a red X crossing them out). Plants and zombies will recharge faster, and sun or brains will fall from the sky in pairs and at double the speed. This mechanic helps keep a game from lasting too long and allows it to end quickly.

Trivia

  • Marigolds are not allowed in Versus Mode to prevent indefinite gold farming.
    • Likewise, Balloon Zombie doesn't even have a seed packet on the "Pik ur Zombeez" screen, and is thus unavailable. This is because he'd be pointless or overpowered, depending on whether the opponent selected Cactus.
      • This is the reason Blover isn't allowed either.
  • Not counting Plants vs. Zombies 2, this is currently the only level where graves can spawn in the daytime.
  • The zombie selector says "Pik ur Zombies" instead of "Pik ur Zombeez" in the DS version.
  • Wall-nut, Tall-nut, Pumpkin, Trash Can Zombie, Screen Door Zombie, and Chomper always have a recharge time of 30, 15, and 7.5 seconds, respectively, both before and during Sudden Death.
  • When played, most zombies will rise out of the ground on the square that the zombie player's cursor was when they went to summon that zombie, meaning said cursor must be to the right of the red line.
    • The exceptions are Flag Zombie and his huge wave, Dancing Zombie, Zomboni, Jack-in-the-Box Zombie, Digger Zombie, Bungee Zombie, Catapult Zombie, and Gargantuar. These zombies will appear how they would in any other level: on top of a plant for Bungee Zombie, and at the far right of the lane for the others. Therefore, it doesn't matter where the zombie player's cursor is in the lane.
  • Threepeater, Starfruit, Melon-pult, and Grave Buster are the only plants with increased recharges from the rest of the game.
    • Of them, Grave Buster is the only one who's recharge increases after Sudden Death, while all the others' recharges are divided by three.
