- For other uses, see Squash (disambiguation).
Squash is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Squash squashes zombies he spots, either a tile and a half ahead of him or behind him, dealing massive damage to all zombies on that tile, thus acting like an instant Potato Mine with better range.
Squash is almost always grumpy, a fact pointed out in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, which states Squash has a case of "Resting Squash Face."
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Squash has appeared in six games.
Origins
Squash's design is based on the Sechium edule, a type of gourd belonging to the plant family Cucurbitaceae. The term "squash" in English also means crushing or squeezing by force, befitting Squash's ability.
His 'sporty' costume in Plants vs. Zombies 2 may also refer to the sport of the same name, Squash.
History
Plants vs. Zombies
- Main article: Squash (PvZ)
In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Squash is unlocked after beating Level 3-1. He costs 50 sun and can be considered a better Potato Mine, not having to arm themselves and being able to squash zombies behind him.
In ZomBotany 2, a zombie based on him appears, the Squash Zombie. Squash Zombie works just like Squash, squashing the first plant ahead of them with their Squash head, instantly destroying the Squash Zombie in the process. For whatever reason, while in the original game, this zombie is exclusive to that minigame, in Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition, starting with War of the Spider Woman, this zombie appears normally in levels.
Plants vs. Zombie: Journey to the West also has the exclusive Hero Plant based on Squash named Pig Squash. Pig Squash is able to move anywhere on the screen, can charge up to squash zombies in a selected area, and can also summon Garden Rakes and heal itself.
Upgrades can let Pig Squash give more coins when defeating zombies and give it a medium splash in a 3x3 area per attack.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Squash (PvZ2)
In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Squash returns as a gem Premium plant, costing 100 gems. Just like the first game, he can squash zombies ahead or behind him, getting a whole tile range buff as well. However, Squash prioritizes zombies behind him, which can easily lead to his own downfall.
If leveled up, Squash can remain on the board after a single squashing, returning to his original position and dealing extra damage to zombies that are on his original tile. When fully leveled up in the main game, he can squash zombies two more times while in the Chinese version, he will have a 50% chance to remain every time.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Main article: Squash (Boss)
Squash returns in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and later Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Here, he is the the plant version of the Zombomb, approaching the zombies' Tombstone in Graveyard Ops, dealing massive damage to it and any zombies caught in the attack.
In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, one must be fought in the "League of Awesome" Super Duper Brainz mission while in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, Squash both appears on the bridge of Camp Near-a-Lake and as a mini-boss in the "Becoming One With The Dumb" quest.
In the plant version of Town Center, the player must escort a Squash named Mike up to the camp by Sundrop Hills. If successfully escorted, the player will get the Hike with Mike medal.
Squash has a variant called the Spooky Squash. Spooky Squash is a Boss Hunt exclusive boss in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and a normal boss in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.
This Squash fires fireballs at zombies, does a squash attack that doesn't destroy them and can breath fire ahead of them. In both their Boss Hunt and Super Wave, Spooky Squash has insanely high health and defense that must be countered by Candy (Garden Warfare 2 only) or Soup (Battle for Neighborville only), letting the one who obtained the item and those around them deal massive damage to them.
Oddly enough, in Battle for Neighborville, Spooky Squash is both called Spooky Squash and Pumpkin Squash multiple times in the game.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
- Main article: Squash (PvZH)
Squash also appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a Basic Common Plant Trick in the Solar class.
He costs 5, is part of the Squash tribe, and like the mainline games, is able instantly destroy any zombie, as long as it doesn't have the Untrickable trait.
Winter Squash is a Premium Super-Rare plant based on Squash in the Smarty class.
It cost 4, have 2/6 stats, and is part of the Squash tribe. Its ability allows it to instantly destroy any zombie and Gravestone that get Frozen, making it a key player in Plant Freeze decks.
Plants vs. Zombies 3
- Main article: Squash (PvZ3)
Squash's most recent appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as a Rare Trap plant, reprising his role from the previous games.
His Plant Food ability is Spring Training, dealing massive damage to zombies in a 3x3 area ahead of him and ignore armor while his Tacobility is Gourdgeous, which not only increases his damage, but lets him stay on the lawn to squash again.
A plant similar to him is Butternut Squash, costing 3 sun with the same rarity and category.
Butternut Squash has the exact same ability, Plant Food, and Tacobility as Squash, simply dealing less damage in return for buttering surviving zombies in a 3x3 area.

Trivia
- Interestingly enough, both a Squash upgrade in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Squash's Plant Food ability in Plants vs. Zombies 3 is named Spring Training. It is likely this is simply a coincidence.
- In the Plants vs. Zombies Web Version, Squash is unlocked on Level 1-5, replacing Potato Mine. It's probably unlocked here since pool levels don't appear in this version.
