Peashooter

—Peashooter's description, Plants vs. Zombies Heroes | ||
Peashooter is a recurring Plant and one of the main faces within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Unlocked by default in Plants vs. Zombies, he is the first ever character to make a playable appearance in the series, and has consistently appeared in every game since.
Peashooter's personality and character throughout the franchise have rarely been elaborated on, with the most stated about him being his high determination and perseverance in fighting zombies. [citation needed]
Development
Like most other pea-shooting plants, the Peashooter is based on the pea plant (Pisum sativum). Its name is a pun based on the peashooter toy and its function as a literal shooter of peas.
Early designs of Peashooter had it look more accurate to a pea plant's pod, a design later given to Pea Pod in Plants vs. Zombies 2. Additionally, early concept art reveals that Peashooter had additional leaves on the back of its head - the same as Repeater - and was changer later in the game's development, considering the same artwork is used in Slot Machine and some trailers for Plants vs. Zombies.
In Plants vs. Zombies 2, the Peashooter's fundamental design was kept, but its movements were changed to be more animated and expressive, with additional details such as its peas visibly making their way through its stem - in line with PvZ2's goals for improving the characters' designs in general.[1] However, the game saw the introduction of Plant Food, a mechanic that would give the player more interaction with their placed Plants. Peashooter's Plant Food ability had him fire a barrage of peas in quick succession, making him much more viable against stronger Zombies than he otherwise would have been.
Plants vs. Zombies 3 would also go on to make the Peashooter even more expressive in its posing and animations, although again while preserving its fundamental design. It also introduced Baby Peashooters, with a smaller yet chubby look. In the older version of the game, as well as its Chinese version, the Peashooter also had a Tacobility, upgrading it into a Repeater.
Shooters
Garden Warfare saw a drastic change to the designs of Plants in general, and Peashooter received several changes to make him fit for running around and shooting Zombies. These include the addition of arms with pea pods for hands, loaded with peas to be fired at enemies. Moreover, Peashooter was given many variants with their own unique twists, such as Fire Pea, and these were further expanded in Garden Warfare 2 as well.
Battle for Neighborville saw a great simplification of Peashooter's Garden Warfare design, even removing variants completely.
Spin-offs
As the first 3D game, Adventures gave Peashooter his first 3D model and new animations when he attacks, is knocked out, and wins, giving him more expression. Some changes were made to adapt him to the new gameplay. For example, his range was changed to a 5x5 area. The game also introduces the Plant Perk, an item that allows players to power up plants for five seconds by spending 25 sun. Using it with the Peashooter increases its damage and range temporarily.
