Marigold is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Marigold is an alternate version of the Sunflower, producing Coins instead of Sun. Depending on whether the player is playing for the Plants or Zombies, Marigold will either reward the player with coins through cultivation as an ally, or through vanquish as an opponent.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Marigold has had major appearances in five games, with cameos in almost every major release in the form of a loading icon.

Origins

Marigold is based on and named after the real-life plant of the same name, a genus of about 15–20 species of annual and perennial herbaceous plants in the daisy family Asteraceae native to southwestern Asia, western Europe and the Mediterranean.

In terms of appearance however, Marigold more closely resembles the common daisy (Bellis perennis). The fact that she produces coins might be a pun on her name, which contains the word "gold" (Marigold).

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-offs, Marigold is the second to last plant unlocked on the Roof.

She can create gold or silver coins not too dissimilar to how Sunflower produces Sun. This makes Marigold a key player in money farming alongside Gold Magnet.

She is also an important plant in the Zen Garden, being the cheapest plant to obtain and having a variety of alternate petal colors. If the player desires, they can buy three Marigold sprouts a day from Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies.

Marigold reappears in Plants vs. Zombies 2, having been added in the 2.1.1 Far Future update along with the Zen Garden

Unlike her appearance in the previous game, Marigold has been reduced to the sidelines, simply being a plant exclusive to the Zen Garden. She gives coins to the player each time she grows, but doesn't do much otherwise. The only way to plant a Marigold in a level is by using hacks, and if so, she behaves much like she does in the first game.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Marigold reappears as a fightable boss in the shooter games Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and the more recent, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.

Similar to the Treasure Yeti, Marigold is a pacifist who will only attack zombies as a last resort, instead preferring to flee from any and all zombies she encounters. When damaged, Marigold will drop coins behind herself and upon defeat will release a large amount of coins and diamonds. If not defeated after a certain amount of time, she will disappear.

She appears in multiple Backyard Battleground quests in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and can spawn in the zombie Town Center or Weirding Woods in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville, where she will drop a crystal dog that must be returned to the Strange Well if she's defeated.

Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)

Marigold's latest appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Daisy line, evolving from Daisy and evolving into Golden Chrysanthemum. She attacked by firing money at enemies and appeared in the game even before she was added as an obtainable plant, being able to be hunted down for money during special events.

Her active ability was Money King, which dealt damage to all the enemies on-screen and dealt 5% more damage per coin used, being able to use up to 7 coins while her passive ability was Tax Collection, which gave a 20% chance of collecting a gold coin when a plant activated their active ability.

Her soulmates were members of the Spike line for a health boost and either members of the Dragon line or members of the Coffee line and Watermelon line together for a damage boost.
