Scaredy-shroom is a minor recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Scaredy-shroom is a mushroom who attacks zombies at long range, but hides when they get too close.
Almanac entries for Scaredy-shroom fittingly depicts him as quite timid and shy, and is fearful enough to regret enlisting for zombie combat. His almanac entry in the first game funnily enough implies that one of the few things Scaredy-shroom is not afraid of is clowns.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, he has appeared in six games.
Origins
The exact mushroom Scaredy-shroom is based on is never explicitly stated in any game it appears in. In terms of appearance however, Scaredy-shroom resembles the violet webcap (Cortinarius violaceus), also known as the violet cort, a fungus in the webcap genus Cortinarius native across the Northern Hemisphere.
Scaredy-shroom's name is a combination of "scaredy cat," a term usually used to refer to an easily frightened person, because it gets scared and hides from when zombies are near, and the suffix "-shroom," meaning that it is a mushroom.
History
Plants vs. Zombies
- Main article: Scaredy-shroom (PvZ)
In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Scaredy-shroom is the third last plant obtained in the Night area of the game.
He costs 25 sun, and fires at the exact range and damage as the Peashooter, effectively being a cheaper substitute. However, if a zombie is anywhere within a 3x3 area around Scaredy-shroom, he will hide, refusing to attack or defend himself until all zombies around him are either defeated or have moved out of Scaredy-shroom's vicinity.
Being a mushroom, he is nocturnal and requires planting a Coffee Bean on him in order to be awake during the day, effectively costing the same amount of sun as a Peashooter.
Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (Archived content)
- Main article: Shamrock
While Scaredy-shroom did not make an appearance in the Facebook exclusive Plants vs. Zombies Adventures due to the entire game taking place during the day and lacking a nocturnal mushroom mechanic, a similar plant named the Shamrock appeared in his place.
Shamrock functioned near identically to Scaredy-shroom due to only being able to attack long range targets and hiding when they came within a 3x3 area of hit. Unlike Scaredy-shroom however, Shamrock dealt higher damage than a Peashooter and could attack farther, albeit much more slowly.
Shamrock would also be ignored by zombies when hiding, and could only be damaged by Gas Can Zombie's explosion.
Shamrock also had a VIP counterpart named the Shamrockstar. Shamrockstar dealt more damage than the standard Shamrock and only hid when a zombie was in the tile directly in front of him.
Garden Warfare series and Battle for Neighborville
- Main article: Scaredy-shroom (Spawnable)
Scaredy-shroom makes for more prominent appearances in the Garden Warfare series of shooter games, as well as in the more recent shooter game, Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville.
Scaredy-shroom appears as a spawnable potted turret, attacking zombies from a further range and with a higher rate than most other potted plants. Just like his appearance in the original game it debuted in, he will hide when zombies get too close to it and won't attack until his proximity is clear.
Unlike his original appearance however, Scaredy-shroom will take reduced damage when hiding and zombie AI will not target or attack him unless they had just been damaged by said Scaredy-shroom in question.
In the original Garden Warfare game, Scaredy-shroom also has a monster themed variant for the Lawn of Doom Halloween event named the "Frankenshroom". This variant is functionally identical to its original counterpart, with the exception of its own unique selection icon, customized model, and limited availability.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only)
- Main article: Spray Mushroom line
Scaredy-shroom also makes an appearance in the Chinese exclusive turn-based card game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second tier in the Spray Mushroom line, evolving from Puff-shroom and evolving into Fume-shroom.
Scardey-shroom, as well as the rest of his evolutionary line, specialize in countering lane-wide armored zombies by attacking multiple targets in their lane as well as dealing poisonous damage, forcing opponents to take continuous damage.
He is one of the first evolution lines the player receives in the game, being unlocked in the tutorial.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Scaredy-shroom (PvZ2)
Scaredy-shroom would make a grand reappearance in the tower defense games in Plants vs. Zombies 2, where he was added in the 10.6 update as part of the "Scaredy-shroom's Fearful" Arena season.
He functions identically to how he did in the original Plants vs. Zombies, firing spores at zombies down his land and hiding from them when they got too near. Unlike the original however and similar to the Garden Warfare series, when Scaredy-shroom is hiding, he will take reduced damage from zombies eating him, making him a semi-defensive plant. Although Scaredy-shroom has less health than an average plant, 200 HP as opposed to the more common 300, his ability reduces damage received by 40%.
Despite dealing the same amount of damage as Peashooter, Scaredy-shroom is still a quarter of a cost, allowing him to function as a quick planting offense with a defensive bonus to assist in when waves begin to get too hectic.

Trivia
- While Scaredy-shroom ultimately ended up returning in Plants vs. Zombies 2, he was originally planned to return much earlier as an unlockable plant in the Dark Ages world, acting the same as he did in the first game. While he was ultimately scrapped, he did have placeholder sprites and functioned as intended when hacked in game. It is not concretely known why Scaredy-shroom was scrapped from appearing in Dark Ages.
