When other plants talk about me, they say I'm too gruff. They say I'm difficult to approach, that I'm afraid to let others get too close to me. Also, I smell terrible.

Endurian is a minor recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Endurian is a defensive plant able to protect other plants from being eaten while also preventing zombies from advancing through the player's lawn.

What makes Endurian unique is his ability to deal short-ranged damage to any and all zombies that eat him, dealing continuous damage like a Spikeweed.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Endurian has appeared in three games.

Origins

Durian(real).jpg

Endurian is based on the durian fruit, a term for a group of fruits of plants belonging to the genus Durio, characterized by their thorn-covered husk and distinctive flesh odor.

His name is portmanteau of "endure," reflecting its defensive ability to endure zombie attacks and "durian," the real-life plant this plant is based on.

History

Endurian made his first appearance in the now-defunct Chinese exclusive tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies Online, where he was an unlockable plant in Pirate Seas.

He cost 135 sun, the first in the franchise to not cost a multiple of 25, and had the same amount of health as a Wall-nut, but with the range and damage output of a Spikeweed. He could deal damage to multiple zombies at once, so long as they are in the same tile as him.

Endurian also had an interesting Plant Food effect that was unlike all the other defensive plants, where he exploded and dealt damage instead of gaining armor or creating a shield.

Endurian would reappear with a completely original design in Plants vs. Zombies 2 as the third plant unlocked in Lost City, unlocked after beating Day 10.

He retains his ability to deal consecutive damage to nearby zombies, but unlike his appearance in Plants vs. Zombies Online, his health was only 75% of that of Wall-nut, making his health closer to Infi-nut's.

He is a member of the Reinforce-mint family, who increased his damage by 80, his health by 5,000, and instantly activated his Plant Food effect while he is on the lawn. Endurian's Plant Food effect, like most defensive plants, grants him metallic armor, which lets him deal more damage and absorb more bites or a single Gargantuar smash.

In the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, he appears as a monthly special plant and can be upgraded to have a damaging aura in a 3x3 area around himself. This aura can deal continuous damage and ignores zombie armor, meaning it can quickly defeat a Conehead Zombie as though it were a standard Basic Zombie.

Endurian's most recent appearance was in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Pineapple line, evolving from Spinnapple and evolving into Jackfruit. Endurian attacked by lashing his spikes at zombies that get too close, and his line specialized in protecting the team by taunting enemies.

His active ability was Taunting which put him in a taunting state for four turns, which redirected some enemy attacks to him and gave him a 20% boost in his defense and dodge stats while his passive ability was Eye for an Eye, which counterattacked enemies for half of his usual attack stat when hurt.

His soulmates were members of the Boomerang line for a health boost, members of the Clover line for a dodge boost, and members of the Spike line and the Doom line for a defense boost.

An earlier incarnation of Endurian existed in previous versions of the game's data complete with a drastically different design and ability.

In this previous incarnation, Endurian would have reduced the damage of the zombie with the highest attack stat.
