Snow Pea, sometimes referred to as Ice Pea, is a major recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Snow Pea acts like typical Peashooters, except Snow Pea has the ability to slow down or even freeze zombies entirely by firing frozen peas at them. It is safe to assume that Snow Pea is considered the flagship ice plant, due to Snow Pea's frequent reappearances in the franchise.

Snow Pea's character descriptions across all games present in are always littered with various ice-based puns and wordplay, something that Snow Pea has shown frequent distain and annoyance at. Aside from a strong distaste towards ice jokes, Snow Pea has been stated to be quite amicable amongst friends and is said to be quite physically active, participating in a number of activities such as table tennis, spelunking and ice sculpting.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Snow Pea has appeared in every game in the Plants vs. Zombies franchise with the exception of Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and some Talkweb mini-programs.

Origins

Like most other pea-shooting plants, Snow Pea is based on the pea plant (Pisum sativum).

Snow Pea's name refers to the real-life snow pea, a variety of edible-pod pea with flat pods and thin pod walls that are eaten whole in its pod while still unripe.

It also refers to snow which is cold, referring to how Snow Pea shoots out frozen peas, a cold projectile and how the plant is cold itself.

History

Plants vs. Zombies

Snow Pea1.png

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Snow Pea is the second offensive plant the player unlocks, being obtained after beating Level 1-6.

He attacks identically to Peashooter, but his peas also chill and slow down zombies. Zombies continuously hit by Snow Pea's frozen peas will be slowed until either a certain amount of time has past, or if they are thawed out by a fire plant. If Snow Pea's frozen peas are ignited by a Torchwood, his peas will simply thaw out and behave like a standard pea projectile.

Snow Pea made a reappearance in PopCap's ill-fated Facebook game Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, having the same ability he did in the first game. However, he costs 125 sun rather than 175 and deals more damage than Peashooter.

This game introduces the idea of defusing zombies with fire based objects, being able to defuse Rocket Zombie's rocket and Gas Can Zombie's cigar.

He has a VIP variant based on him, the Ice Queen Pea, who had longer range and dealt more damage.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Snow Pea returns as a Premium plant, retaining his old ability while costing 150 sun.

Just like his appearance in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, he is able to extinguish fire-based zombies such as Explorer Zombie and Prospector Zombie, preventing them from using their abilities and allowing the player to deal with them like any other zombie. As of the 9.1.1 update, he will also be able to occasionally fire a frozen pea that is able to temporarily freeze zombies in place for a short time.

He is a member of the Winter-mint family, who makes his peas deal 120 more damage, a 25% more chance to shoot a freezing pea and increasing his Plant Food's damage by 30 damage. His Plant Food effect has him create an ice trail which slows every zombie in his lane while he fires a burst of 60 frozen peas.

Garden Warfare series

The Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare series features two types of Snow Peas, neither actually called Snow Pea: a variant of the Peashooter and a Potted Plant.

Variant

Ice Pea is the ice variant of the Peashooter first introduced in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare.

His primary weapon is the Ice Pea Cannon, which is similar to his normal variant's primary weapon, except it will slow zombies hit by the attack. If these zombies are hit enough, they'll instead be frozen, leaving them open for further attack.

Potted Plant

Ice Peashooter is a Potted Plant exclusive to Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Ice Peashooter works similarly to the Pea Cannon but his peas are like their playable counterpart, slowing then freezing zombies.

While he isn't plantable in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, there is an Ice Peashooter NPC in the Backyard Battleground and oddly enough, two of them appear as enemies in the "Death Alley" Zomburger Delivery Challenge.

Snow Pea next appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the second plant in the Snow Pea line. He evolved from Droplet Shooter and evolved into Frostbolt Shooter. Like in the main game, he attacked zombies by firing frozen peas at them.

His active ability was Quick Freeze, which dealt damage to the closest enemy in his lane with a chance to freeze them for 2 turns along with extinguishing any flames while his passive ability was Rigor, which let his attacks avoid up to 180 damage worth of armor.

His soulmates were members of the Pea line for a health boost, members of the Hazelnut line for a damage boost, and the Radish and Electric Grass lines for a damage boost.

Snow Pea then appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a 2SunPvZH.png 2StrengthPvZH.png/2HeartPvZH.png Pea plant in the PvZH Smarty Icon.pngSmarty class. His ability PvZH Frozen Icon.pngFreezes any zombie he damages, which forces them to skip a turn. If he survives the zombie's attack, he can theoretically PvZH Frozen Icon.pngFreeze a zombie indefinitely, making him incredibly useful for freeze synergy decks.

Due to mechanics of the game, if the player really wanted to, they can put a Snow Pea behind a Torchwood and benefit from it, this is the only game where this is possible.

Plants vs. Zombies 3 (Currently unavailable)

Snow Pea appears in Plants vs. Zombies 3, where she reprises her role from the previous games. In this game, she is a Rare Shooter plant costing 5 sun. Like other games, she fires frozen peas that slow zombies down.

Her Plant Food ability is Snowball Fight which works like her Plant Food in Plants vs. Zombies 2, slowing all the zombies down in her lane and firing a barrage of peas and her Tacobility is Ice Queen, giving their peas a chance to freeze zombies solid.

Talkweb mini-games

Snow TwopeaterTencent.png

In Plants vs. Zombies 2: Garden, Snow Pea is the fifth plant in the Slowing line. It also appears in form of a Twopeater, Threepeater and Pea Pod, which are its upgrade variations. It also appears in the forms of a Threepeater in Plants vs. Zombies 2: Revenge. In Plants vs. Zombies 2: Garden, the Snow Twopeater shoots twice in each attack cycle and 2 peas in each time, in the speed of a Repeater. In Plants vs. Zombies 2: Revenge it shoots 2 frozen peas rapidly.

In Plants vs. Zombies 2: League, its downgrade in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, Droplet Shooter, is renamed to Ice Pea Shooter. A new variation, the Re-Frostbolt Shooter is also implemented.
