Torchwood (Plants vs. Zombies)
- For other uses, see Torchwood (disambiguation).
Torchwood is a plant appearing in the Plants vs. Zombies game as well as their Chinese spin-offs.
Torchwood lights regular peas that pass through him, turning them into fire peas. These fire peas deal twice the damage of normal peas, but also removes all ice-based effect from the target, such as Ice-shroom's freezing and Winter Melon's chilling effect. The fire peas also do splash damage and all frozen peas fired by Snow Pea will thaw, becoming normal peas and losing their slowing ability.

About
- For more information about this character, see Torchwood.
Torchwood is unlocked after finishing Level 3-7. Each fire pea generated by Torchwood deals 40 damage worth of damage to the initial target, and 14 splash damage in a 1x1 area. Fire peas will remove ice-based effects from their direct target, but the splash damage cannot. In fog levels, Torchwood will also reveal an approximately 3x3 area around it.
Almanac entry
Strategies
- Torchwood has the unique ability to double the damage output of almost all peashooting plants, as well as providing additional splash damage.
- Thanks to these abilities, Torchwood works well with the majority of peashooting plants, with the exception of Snow Pea, whose slowing ability will be nullified by fire-based attacks, which Torchwood provides.
- Although these abilities are incredibly powerful, it is also important to note that with a price tag of 175 sun, Torchwoods can be very expensive to set up, and also require additional planting space.
- As fireballs created by Torchwood remove any slowing effects applied by Snow Pea, Winter Melon and Ice-shroom, it is up to the player to decide whether Torchwood's unique ability is worth the tradeoff of not being able to slow zombies down.
- While slowing is an incredibly helpful mechanic, overwhelming zombies with massive amounts of firepower is also an option.
- Each strategy has its own advantages. Setting up a defense based around Torchwood requires both a large sun investment, as well as ample board space (for both the peashooting plants and Torchwood himself). On the contrary, slow-based defenses (i.e., Winter Melon-based setups) require less sun and space, but greatly lack damage, and often need support from other offensive options.
- While slowing is an incredibly helpful mechanic, overwhelming zombies with massive amounts of firepower is also an option.
- Because Torchwood double the damage of all peas that pass through him, he should be placed in the right side of the lawn, with many peashooting plants planted behind him to maximize damage output.
- Torchwood works especially well with Gatling Pea and Threepeater.
- Gatling Pea is the fastest peashooting plant in the game, capable of firing 4 peas in a single attack. When passed through a Torchwood, this damage is doubled.
- Additionally, 2 Gatling Peas deal less damage than 1 Gatling Pea combined with a Torchwood, as the latter not only provide equal firepower, but also additional crowd-control capabilities through splash damage. They also require much less sun to set up.
- While a single Threepeater cannot do much damage on its own, multiple Threepeaters can easily dish out devastating amounts of damage when paired with Torchwoods.
- Gatling Pea is the fastest peashooting plant in the game, capable of firing 4 peas in a single attack. When passed through a Torchwood, this damage is doubled.
- Peas shot by Split Pea's back head can also be set aflame by Torchwood. This allows Split Pea to deal with Digger Zombies (and to a lesser extent, Imps) much more efficiently.
- However, setting up this type of defense can be very costly, and should only be used when the player is using a Torchwood-based defense beforehand for maximum value.
- As an added bonus, Torchwood can clear up a 3x3 plus-shaped area of fog. While this can be helpful, it is completely overshadowed by Plantern and Blover's fog-clearing abilities, and should not be relied on.
- However, the Blind Faith achievement does not forbid the player from using Torchwood to clear the fog, leaving this as an option. On the contrary, Nebulaphile, the DS version for this achievement, does not allow the player to use Torchwood.
- Even so, this fog-clearing ability is gimmicky at best, and does not reveal zombies before they could reach Torchwood himself.
- However, the Blind Faith achievement does not forbid the player from using Torchwood to clear the fog, leaving this as an option. On the contrary, Nebulaphile, the DS version for this achievement, does not allow the player to use Torchwood.
- Torchwood-based defenses in Survival: Endless are not impossible to maintain, but they do not allow the player to utilize freezing/slowing plants, which would otherwise be incredibly helpful in controlling the horde. Hence, these strategies are not recommended for newer players.
- While fireballs created by Torchwood can deal damage to groups of zombies, their area of effect is much smaller compared to Winter Melon or Gloom-shroom's area of attack.
- Additionally, Winter Melon also slows down multiple zombies, allowing Cob Cannons - the main damage dealer in Survival: Endless - more time to take out massive waves of zombies.
- While fireballs created by Torchwood can deal damage to groups of zombies, their area of effect is much smaller compared to Winter Melon or Gloom-shroom's area of attack.

Trivia
- In the Nintendo DS version, an Imitater Torchwood is not a grayscale version, but rather a green version with blue fire and eyes.
- Even though Imitater Torchwood has a grey flame atop his head, fireballs created by him still have yellow flames, not grey.
- He does not affect peas shot by Peashooter Zombies or Gatling Pea Zombies; instead, the peas will only damage the Torchwood.
- He has the distinction of being unable to read according to his Suburban Almanac entry, implying that most other plants do know how to read despite them being plants.
- Flamewood's almanac entry directly references this, saying that Torchwood learned how to read after eating a fruit from the Tree of Wisdom.
- Excluding upgrade plants, he is one of two plants that rely on another plant to work, the other being Coffee Bean.
- He is one of the three plants which can affect fog, the others being Plantern and Blover. This makes him an environment modifier.
- He is one of the twelve plants that appear in the seed selection screen after getting the Grave Buster in the online version; the others are the Ice-shroom, Lily Pad, Potato Mine, Threepeater, Tangle Kelp, Jalapeno, Spikeweed, Tall-nut, Doom-shroom, Cactus, and Blover.
- Despite making no logical sense, he will not ignite peas if he's put to sleep by Talisman Zombie.
