Scaredy-shroom is the fourteenth plant introduced in Plants vs. Zombies, and is unlocked after competing Level 2-6.

Scaredy-shroom is a mushroom that performs identically to Peashooter in terms of damage and range but with a quarter of the sun cost at 25. However, he hides if a zombie is anywhere around a 3x3 proximity, preventing it from attacking until they are defeated.

Origins

Scaredy-shroom is based on the violet webcap (Cortinarius violaceus), also known as the violet cort, a fungus in the webcap genus Cortinarius native across the Northern Hemisphere.

Scaredy-shroom's name is a combination of "scaredy cat," a term usually used to refer to an easily frightened person, because it gets scared and hides from when zombies are near, and the suffix "-shroom," meaning that it is a mushroom.

Strategies

• While quickly outclassed by other attacking plants at later stages of the game, the Scaredy-shroom is still a useful offensive choice for Night and Fog levels.
• At 25 sun, Scaredy-shroom is the cheapest and most efficient alternative for the Peashooter for nighttime levels, providing equal firepower at a quarter of the cost.
  • In nighttime levels where sun is difficult to accumulate early on, Scaredy-shroom's price tag greatly outshines its weakness.
• In nighttime levels, Scaredy-shroom's greatest strength lies in its superior range compared to the Puff-shroom.
  • Once the player has finished setting up their sun producers, the leftmost columns of Puff-shrooms (usually column 3 and 4 from the left) should gradually be replaced by Scaredy-shrooms.
  • In early stages of the game, two columns of Scaredy-shrooms combined with two columns of Puff-shrooms in front of them can reliably take out Conehead Zombies, allowing the player to save up even more sun to upgrade their defense over the course of the level.
  • Fume-shrooms also work great with Scaredy-shrooms, as they provide piercing damage, helping them deal with larger hordes of zombies more effectively.
• However, its weakness also means that it cannot replace the Peashooter in daytime levels. As using a Scaredy-shroom in these levels requires the same amount of sun (25 sun for the Scaredy-shroom, and 75 sun for the Coffee Bean needed to wake it up) as a Peashooter, there is no good reason not to pick the Peashooter over the Scaredy-shroom in daytime levels.
  • Therefore, even if the player is attempting to earn the Good Morning achievement, the Scaredy-shroom is still a poor choice. For 25 less sun, Puff-shrooms can take out early zombies much more efficiently, compared to the Scaredy-shroom.
    • Their inferior range may be an issue at first, but their stable firepower more than makes up for it.

Versus Mode

• Scaredy-shroom is a relatively good pick as an early-game attacker due to its total sun cost of 50 sun (25 for Scaredy-Shroom, 25 for Coffee Bean) while you save sun for more effective plants such as Starfruit, Threepeater, or Melon-Pults to counter late-game zombie options like Pogo Zombies, Gargantuars, and Dancing Zombies, the last one you should already be able to deal with just fine. Be careful though, as Digger Zombies, Bungee Zombies, and the previously mentioned Pogo Zombies do counter Scaredy-Shroom quite hard due to their ability to go under your defense, the ability to totally shut down a 3x3 area of Scaredy-Shrooms for a few seconds, and the speed plus ability to completely ignore most plants respectively.

Trivia

• Bungee Zombies can scare it from two spaces away horizontally, because they stretch their arms out to the sides.
• It can be considered as the opposite of Puff-shroom, as it can only attack zombies at a long range, while Puff-shroom can only attack zombies at a short range. Additionally, Scaredy-shroom is tall in height, while Puff-shroom is short.
• It shares the same trait as Shamrock and Shamrockstar in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, as well as Cactus and Shadow Peashooter in Plants vs. Zombies 2, as they all hide themselves when zombies get close to them. However, Cactus and Shadow Peashooter don't hide out of fear. Rather, it's for tactical purposes.
• It is said to have long range, though it really has the same range as a Peashooter and most other projectile plants, although the long range is likely said because it hides when zombies get near. 
• Digger Zombies can scare this plant when underground.
• In I, Zombie, its cardboard version moves its cap like a real plant when it gets scared, despite not performing its normal idle animation.
• Scaredy-shroom is often misspelled as "Scaredy-Shroom".
