Scrapped Worlds

 (Unsourced)

Primitive Tribe

Primitive Tribe was going to be a world based off of prehistoric times, but was scrapped. The world was used in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. The world likely would've used the same or similar zombies and map to the All Stars version.

Viking World

Viking World is a scrapped world that was based off of the Viking Age period during the Middle Ages. It was used in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. The world likely would've shared its zombies and map with the All Stars version. This world was likely replaced by Frostbite Caves.

Circus City

Not to be confused with the unused world in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars based off of circuses.

Circus City is a scrapped world based off of circuses. Zombies in this world might've been designed similarly to the Carnival zombies from the Backyard Big Top Thymed Event.

16th world poll

There was a poll for what theme the 16th world should be on Talkweb's Bilibili. Out of the five options, the Atlantis world won the poll. However, it was scrapped in favor of Heian Age.

Altantis

A world based off of the Lost City of Atlantis was the first option of the poll and was the winner of the poll, but was scrapped due to Fight the Sea Demons, Brave the Dragon King's Palace, and East Sea Dragon Palace in Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition and Plants vs. Zombies Online already existing and this world would make the underwater theme too repetitive. It won the poll with 6052 votes and 47.58-percent of the poll. A concept of the lawn that used planks similarly to Pirate Seas was shown, and it was stated that the specific lawn was not going to be used, before the entire world was announced as scrapped in favor of Heian Age.

Jiangnan Water Town

A world based off of ancient cities in the Jiangnan area of China famous for their canals and bridges, known as Water towns, or Canal towns. Not much about the world is known outside of its theming. It had the third most votes on the polls, being 2106 (16.56-percent).

The Warring States Period

The Warring States Period was the third option in the poll, the second-most voted option with place with 22 percent of the polls votes. This world was based on The Warring States Period, an era in ancient Chinese history characterized by warfare, as well as bureaucratic and military reforms and consolidation.

Electric Age

Electric Age was the fourth option on the poll, in fourth place with 8.75 percent of the poll's vote (1113 votes). The world was going to likely based on a period of time in the future between Modern Day and Far Future. The concepts of the zombies all use high-technology (but not in the same appearances of Far Future's zombies), and steampunk.

Babylon

A world based off of Babylon, the capital of the Babylonian empire. It was option five on the poll, getting the least amount of votes, being 686 (5.39-percent).

Narcissus Shooter

Before her official release, Narcissus was intended to have a new, unique design instead of reusing her Plants vs. Zombies Online design.

Sunshine Leek

Before his official release, Sunshine Leek was teased throughout the revelations of the update with a different appearance from his current one.

Unused Plants

Small Cherry

The cherry that is left behind by Cherry Bomb once it reaches Level 2. Its sun cost is 0.

Carrot Missile

The missile created by Carrotillery's Plant Food effect. Its sun cost is 0.

Small Chestnut

Chestnut Squad's projectile. It absorbs 4000 damage.

Marigold

Even though seen in the game, the plant itself was never used. It has a sun cost of 50 and it's homeworld is Far Future.

Basho-pult

It is internally referred to as Basho-pult. This plant has a sun cost of 123. When loaded in, it does nothing.

Its concept art shows that it is based on the Japanese banana tree (Musa basjoo), or bashō (芭蕉) in Chinese; and features elements relating to baseball. In the .lib files, they have multiple references to attributes like “CatchBall”.

Small Cactus

The projectile sent out by Cactus' Level 5 ability. It is always set to be level 5 itself by default, and does not roll automatically.

Baby Bruit

Baby version left by Dragon Bruit upon death. Its sun cost is 0, and comes in 5 different variations: regular, shadow, fiery, icy, electrical.

Sunpod

Sunpod was imported into the Chinese version with the Lost City update, but is still unused.

Sungun

Sungun was imported into the Chinese version with the Lost City update, but is still unused.

Small Explode-O-Nut

Small Explode-O-Nut was meant to be left behind by Explode-O-Nut once it reached a certain level after being eaten, but was replaced by a Potato Mine. It costs 0 sun.

Frog

Frogs that are made by a Witch Zombies are also its own plant. It's code most likely reuses Squash's one.

Pitaya

Probably an early concept of Dragonfruit. It's abilities are different with Dragonfruit though, Placeholder text exists in the lawnstrings of the game, but are recycled from Melon-pult.

Rotten Red

See Rotten Red

Brazil Nut Cannon

A plant based on a brazil nut, its ability seemed to be to change how it attacks depending on what it was facing.

Brazil Nut Fortress

Another plant based on a brazil nut, seemingly being a defensive plant that could catch Relic Hunter Zombies in the air.

Sumo Cashew

Sumo Cashew (腰果相扑; pinyin: Yāoguǒ Xiāngpū) was a scrapped plant planned for Lost City. It appeared to be able to reflect Turquoise Skull Zombie's laser and squash Excavator Zombies who attempted to shovel it up.

Cocoa plants

A cocoa themed plant was planned for the Chinese version of Lost City but was ultimately scrapped. Three designs in particular were created, each with a different ability.

Cocoa-pult (可可投手; pinyin:Kěkě Tóushǒu) was able to lob pieces of chocolate at zombies. Chocolate was able to stun zombies similarly to butter lobbed by Kernel-pult, but zombies stunned by chocolate were able to be eaten by zombies.

Cocoa Shaman (可可萨满; pinyin: Kěkě Sàmǎn) was able to buff surrounding plants using cocoa beans, but its specific area of effect is currently unknown.

Cocoa Shooter (可可射手; pinyin:Kěkě Shèshǒu) was able to spit rapid-fire cocoa beans at zombies, coating them in chocolate. What this specifically entails is currently unknown.

Giant Pitcher Plant

Giant Pitcher Plant (朱龙草; pinyin: Zhū Lóng Cǎo) was a planned plant for the Chinese version of Lost City but was ultimately scrapped.

It appeared to be able to spit some sort of fluid at zombies as an attack, how this differs from other projectiles is currently unknown. It also appears to be able to swallow Relic Hunter Zombies as they swung onto the lawn.

It bears a strong resemblance to Dino-Roar Grass, and it is possible that certain design elements were recycled into Dinonip.

Dicentra

Dicentra was going to be an event plant for a Lunar New Year event, but was scrapped. It's unknown what it would do, but it likely would've involved coins, possibly acting like Marigold.

Decentra is based off of the plant genus of the same name, also known as the bleeding-heart. Its name is likely a pun as its ability would have involved coins, and the word cent is part of the name.

Iris

Iris was going to be in Renaissance Age, but was scrapped. It is based off of the plant genus the same name. Its ability was to remove the paint from the scrapped painting gimmick, and was later replaced by Aloe.

Magnolia

Magnolia is based off of the plant genus of the same name. It was going to be a plant in Renaissance Age, but was scrapped. Its abilities are unknown, however it might've been similar to Red Stinger's due to the second sketch shown. Its eyes resemble Toadstool's.

Brazilian Keel

Brazilian Keel (巴西龙骨; pinyin: Bāxī Lónggǔ) is a scrapped plant with two pretty distinct design concepts. The main design features a caveman-like appearance, with the plant holding a club in one of its arms. Its ability seems to involve hitting the floor with the club. The look hints that it may have been intended for Jurassic Marsh.

The secondary design, shown in the corner, doesn't reveal much about its ability but appears to show it shaking, possibly indicating a defensive or preparatory action.

Green Onion

Green Onion (; pinyin: cōng) is a scrapped plant with both designs featuring the same ability, likely an attack. It spins its green tops, presumably dealing damage to more than one zombie at a time.

Rock 'n' Roll Dragon Snake Orchid

Rock 'n' Roll Dragon Snake Orchid (摇滚龙蛇兰; pinyin: Yáogǔn lóng shé lán) is based off of the Century plant, and was likely planned for Neon Mixtape Tour considering its name and one of the drawings in the concept, where it is depicted holding a guitar. Its ability seems to involve a headbanging mechanic, also fitting the rock-and-roll theme.

Dragon Snake Orchid Medusa

Dragon Snake Orchid Medusa (龙蛇兰美杜莎; pinyin: Lóng shé lán Měi dù shā) is based on an agave and looks slightly like Hurrikale before activating its ability, but it features distinct twisting leaves, which set it apart.

The ability is shown in two concept variations, but there isn't enough information to fully understand its effect. Based on the appearance of the leaves in the ability sketches, it’s presumed that the ability has an extended reach, likely sweeping across multiple columns horizontally.

Dragon Snake Orchid King

Dragon Snake Orchid King (龙蛇兰国王; pinyin: Lóng Shé Lán Guówáng) is another scrapped plant inspired by agaves, featuring a design that blends elements from different species. Its face bears a resemblance to that of Pomegranate Jeweler. The plant's ability appears to be similar to Bloomerang, with a projectile that travels back and forth.

Assault Soldier Lychee and Okra Gunner

Assault Soldier Lychee (著荔枝突击兵; pinyin: Zhù Lì Zhī Tú Jī Bīng) and Okra Gunner (秋葵机枪手; pinyin: Qiū Kuí Jī Qiāng Shǒu) are different plant concepts both in appearance and name for the same ability that seems to involve shooting many straight projectiles.

Jack O' Lantern

There is unused text for Jack O' Lantern in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 which existed in the game long before Jack O' Lantern was added. This early text still exists alongside the current one used for Jack O' Lantern.

Qigong Master

kongfu_zomboss_qigong

An unused boss found in the files. He was intended to be used in Kongfu World Part 2. While he was scrapped, some code for him still remains. Weirdly he also appears in some promotional material, most notably in Talkweb's upload of the Kongfu World OST on Bilibili, which includes his unused animations. One of his attacks involves summoning an ice ball, and using qigong.

Trivia

  • He appears as a King in an official Kongfu World playing cards deck.

Harpoon Gun Zombie

An unused zombie meant for Big Wave Beach. It would freely swim around in water, randomly striking plants using the harpoon, according to an app store description.

Sky City Rocket Imp

An unused zombie meant for Sky City. Its ability is currently unknown, though as it resembles the Rocket Imp from Kongfu World, it could have functioned similarly.

Photographer Zombie

In Lost City, there was originally going to be a zombie holding an old camera as shown in advertisements and in a version of the Lost City Trailers with Chinese-exclusive characters added in, with its ability unknown. It was scrapped and only its Almanac icon remained. Its only animations are seen in the previously mentioned trailer, where it is seen snapping a picture, meaning it may have stunned plants.

Ballet Imp

renai_ballet_imp

A zombie that was going to appear in Renaissance Age Part 2 but was scrapped. According to concept art she was supposed to have a chance of replacing a random member of a Ballet Zombie quartet. She still exists in the game files, albeit with unfinished walking and stunned animations. She can be seen in a Renaissance Age Part 2 advertisement.

The Springening Zombies

The Springening Zombies were intended to appear in the Chinese Version for their event, but said event was scrapped for unknown reasons. They were later used in some time-limited levels, where the Springening Camel Zombies weren't added in properly, resulting in their panels being invisible. Springening Buckethead and Springening Flag Zombie are also used in a single Penny's Classroom level, while Springening Poncho Zombie and Springening Wizard Zombie appear in a few Memory Lane levels. However, Springening Gargantuar and Springening Imp were never used, but can still be found in the game's files.

New Years Camel

lny_camel_onehump, lny_camel_twohump, lny_camel_manyhump, lny_camel_segment

While both the international and Chinese versions had an event for the Lunar New Year, the Chinese version omitted the New Years Camel. However, on one of Talkweb's websites, the New Years Camel is on the list of zombies that appear in game. They still exist in the game's files and function as intended, so why they go unused is unknown.

[Almanac Entry]

[Almanac Header]

Magician Zombie and Zombie Dove

carnie_magician, carnie_dove

Magician Zombie and his Zombie Doves from the international version exist in this game's files and go unused. While a friendly Magician is summoned by the Magic Hat Artifact, the version it creates is internally a seperate zombie, codenamed carnie_magician_artifact, with the doves it creates being codenamed carnie_dove_artifact. Why the original versions of these zombies are in the files is unknown, but it could be because the other Backyard Big Top zombies were/are planned to be ported over at some point.

Magician Zombie and its Artifact counterpart also have text strings for an Almanac entry, however the name, description and description header are all the same, reading 魔术师僵尸 (Magician Zombie). Interestingly, Zombie Dove has some as well, even though it didn't have an entry in the International version, however like with Magician all the strings are the same, just being 魔术师鸽子僵尸 (Magician Dove Zombie). This does not apply for Dove's Artifact variant.

Scrapped Elite Zombies

Talkweb's illustrated handbook website for the game once had silhouette icons for Elite counterparts of Shield Zombie, Arcade Zombie, Octo Zombie and Turquoise Skull Zombie, which were later silently removed. These were likely meant to be added to Memory Lane, as each one also matches up with an Artifact, like the first four Elite zombies do.

Interestingly, the Turquoise Skull variant was named "Elite Archaeologist Zombie" rather than "Elite Turquoise Skull Zombie". This could be for the fact that he would match with the Time Artifact and that his description referred to the elite as an Explorer Zombie.

Scrapped Frostbite Caves Resurgence Zombies

Elite Chief Ice Wind Zombie was originally meant to be an Elite variant of Troglobite based on an unused veteran counterpart for it meant for the international version, he was likely scrapped due to the latter's abilities not translating well into an Elite zombie. This realm also considered a Rally Zombie variant. Despite being finished, the final game never used it for unknown reasons.

Unused Almanac Icons

In the game's files are icons for several zombies that don't appear in the almanac. This strangely includes all of the Fright Theater variants of the Dark Ages zombies, despite them looking visually identical to their original counterparts.

Beta/Scrapped Creative Courtyard Functions

Creative Courtyard had some features cut or partially altered from the mode's final release.

Shop

The mode's shop was originally going to sell gems, however this was scrapped for unknown reasons.

Sky City Zombies

An icon for Sky City was found in the files, intending to feature zombies from said world, however this was scrapped for unknown reasons. This was likely due to Sky City's zombies looking very odd on any world that isn't theirs.

Frost Wind Module

Module for a frost wind event from Frostbite Caves was teased, but was cut and replaced by the black hole event from Kongfu World for unknown reasons.

Beta Brain Busters

 (Unsourced)

Oak Archery

The early Oak Archery was very different from today. The game needs players shoot at the targets and score points instead of attacking zombies. Different targets have different effect. Hitting a Peasant Zombie target will grant a small number of points. Hitting a Zomboss target will grant a large number of points. Hitting a Dave target will deduct a life. The player has three lives. When all off them are deducted, the player loses the level.

Plant Maze

The early Plant Maze was very different from today. When added in the 1.5.0 update, every level was a boss fight with the Zombot Tuskmaster 10,000 BC. Later, the game mechanics were changed to a special type of Save Our Seeds level, due to difficulty constraints.

The main characteristic is that players need to match at least three balls of the same color to make the plants on the left side of the lawn damage Zomboss. Dr.Zomboss will create an ice shield from time to time that can block the bullets of plants in this line for many times.

Unused Levels

 (Unsourced)

Pyramid of Doom

Before being properly added via the Endless Challenge, the Pyramid of Doom was present in the game files but went completely unused. In this state, it worked exactly the same as in the International version.

Speedy Lanes

There is an unused minigame in the code called Speedy Lanes. Zombies have double speed in normal speed gameplay but plants and sun have normal speed. In newer versions of the game, zombies have the same speed as usual. This minigame was also unused in the international version.

Unused Kongfu World Levels

Added in an unknown update, these Kongfu World levels were labeled as Day 31 and Day 32. They were copies of Day 16 and Day 30 respectively but with pre-chosen plants.

Test Levels

Worlds from Kongfu World to Lost City had unused test levels. They were copies of the first day of each world but with a few changes, such as Hammer Zombie appearing in Kongfu World's test level.

Hidden Levels

Five hidden levels that are set in the Lost City. They were exact copies of Lost City - Day 31 from the International version.

Chaos Dimension

The Chaos Dimension, a test level in the international version, was also ported over, where it works the exact same.

Costumes

Some plants had secondary costumes, but were left unused.

Leftover Power-Up Menu Sprites

Version 1.0 of Chinese PvZ2 contained sprites for an early Power-Up menu.

These can be seen in concept art for international PvZ2.

Uiconcept3.jpg

Unused/Early upgrade system features

Old Leveling icons

There exist unused color variants for the old level icons. The color scheme would end up being used for the rarity colors in the 1.8.0 update.

Early Level 5

Level 5 existed prior to the 1.8.0 update, but was unused. Attempting to plant a level 5 plant would just cause the game to crash.

Unused Plant Levels

Added in the 1.8.0 update, there exist graphics for a Level 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Although the actual stats will revert back to Level 1, possibly due to missing code. These are now used in the Two-Player Mode, but are not used for plants.

Unused Upgrade icons

Unused upgrade icons which were left unused in the files.

Unused shields in Sky City

There are two unused types of shields in Sky City in the game's files, where one seemed to be made out of metal while the other was made of gold. They could have been used as upgrades to the regular barrier, or may have been just made as concept designs for the shield.

Scrapped painting gimmick

This gimmick was going to be in Renaissance Age. A "Painter Zombie" would have been placing painting boards in addition to those already on the lawn before the level starts. Zombies covered in paint would spawn from the painting boards if the boards were not hastily destroyed and the zombies would leave behind a trail of footprints. The poisonous trail would continuously damage the plants on top. It was eventually remade into the ability of the Perfume Zombie. The mechanic was scrapped due to the codes not being able to execute the artistic designs properly and the similarity to the tents from Lost City.

Scrapped Lawn Mower

A lawn mower for Speed Racing secret realm was teased on the official website. It was put into production, however due to time constraints its production was stopped and ended up being scrapped. The design was based off a car jack.

Fusion Terrain

An unused terrain type meant to be randomly chosen in Two-Player Mode, despite being scrapped, it remains in the mode's tutorial. The terrain would've made it so many of the same zombie would fuse together into a single stronger zombie with "Elite" properties, giving it immunities to all status effects. It was likely scrapped due to being too similar to the "immunity" buff you can give to the zombies, thus being redundant.

Unused Note

An unused note in the files meant for Kongfu World. No textures were made for it so it uses the Far Future note as a placeholder.

Unused Trophies

Modern Day

The Modern Day Trophy was added in the version 2.2.0 update, the trophy was most likely meant to be awarded once you've completed Modern Day.

Kongfu World

Kungfu World has an unused trophy that would have been awarded to the player after completing Kongfu World. No textures were made for it so it uses the Ancient Egypt trophy as a placeholder.

Sky City

Sky City has an unused trophy that would have been awarded to the player after completing Sky City. No textures were made for it so it uses the Ancient Egypt trophy as a placeholder.

Steam Age

Steam Age has an unused trophy that would have been awarded to the player after completing Steam Age. No textures were made for it so it uses the unused Modern Day trophy as a placeholder.

Developer Text

Found in the world icon textures in the Chinese version as of version 2.2.0.

Unused Music

Ballerina Zombie theme

(Unsourced) Both Ballerina Zombie and Ballerina Imp were supposed to appear on the field with background music, similarly to Disco-tron 3000 and Pianist Zombie. The music is based on "Dance of the Little Swans" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
