Boom Balloon Flower is a manually controlled plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2, introduced in the 8.8.1 update. Boom Balloon Flower is able to launch exploding balloons to any tile on the lawn the player aims them at.

These balloons can be stacked if the player targets the same square (maximum of three) and will explode when zombies get near them in a similar manner to Potato Mine. If there are multiple balloons on a single tile, it will deal more damage to a zombie upon explosion. Balloons will self-destruct after 90 seconds.

In the Chinese version, her damage is increased to 600 damage (at level 1), but the time she takes to make balloons is also increased to 5 seconds.

Origins

Boom Balloon Flower is based on the Platycodon grandiflorus plant, commonly known as the Balloon Flower, a plant native to East Asia named as such due to its balloon-shaped flower buds.

Her Plant Food attack, "Doom Balloon" is based on Doom-shroom from the original Plants vs. Zombies, although its design is more reminiscent of its Plants vs. Zombies Heroes appearance.

Bombard-mint

Plant Food: Spawns a giant Doom-shroom balloon named the "Doom Balloon", that will explode once it reaches the fifth column.

Boom Balloon Flowers spawn exploding balloons that can be placed anywhere on the lawn as traps for zombies.

Boom Balloon Flower's balloons are inflated with hydrogen and aerosolized kerosene. It's an anti-safety measure.

When given Plant Food, Boom Balloon Flower will spawn a giant Doom-shroom balloon named the "Doom Balloon", then she must recharge. The balloon will explode once it reaches the fifth column, dealing 875 (1300 in the Chinese version) damage to zombies and obstacles.

Bombard-mint effect

When boosted by Bombard-mint, Boom Balloon Flower's balloons will deal an additional 1425 damage, and the Doom Balloon will deal an additional 1725 damage.

Strategies

Due to Boom Balloon Flower's high sun cost, it is advised to have a high sun production before you begin planting Boom Balloon Flowers.

Input-wise, Boom Balloon Flower is very similar to Banana Launcher, Missile Toe and Holly Barrier: the player controls when and where the plant would launch balloon mines at, and she can recharge her balloon mines after launching them. Unless for making a Power Tile combo, it is not wise to plant a lot of (more than ten) Boom Balloon Flowers and use them as the sole attack method due to their high recharge rate that could make the player too busy to spawn mines. In many cases, having as few as five would be enough to keep the player occupied

Compared to Banana Launcher and Missile Toe, Boom Balloon Flower's damage per hit is lower, but her reload is far faster and results in her having superior DPS at level 1 (176.92 > 60), and packs enough punch to eliminate a Conehead Zombie.

Boom Balloon Flower's balloons act similarly to Potato Mines. However, her balloons can stay afloat; this means you can place explosive balloons on areas where you usually cannot plant Potato Mines, such as planks and water in Pirate Seas, rising tides in Big Wave Beach, and trap tiles in Lost City. In the latter, the plant will serve as a perfect substitute for Turkey-pult, as Turkey-pult's tofu turkeys can trigger both the boulder and fire trap tiles when the turkeys walk over it, killing all plants in that lane, while the floating balloons prevent that from happening. Unlike the Potato Mine, her balloons can also damage airborne zombies.

Her Plant Food attack can be used to thin out all zombies and obstacles on the lawn. It is best to feed Plant Food to the plant when there are large hordes of zombies in multiple lanes. Her Doom Balloon should not be used as a last resort either, as it takes time for the balloon to reach the fifth column and the zombies may have reached the house before the balloon explodes.

Boom Balloon Flower is also useful in levels with mold colonies, or just about any tile that do not allow plant placement, because her mines still can and function normally. She can even attach mines to other plants to damage zombies trying to attack them.

It's worth mentioning the balloon mines have a limited lifetime of 90 seconds if they are not set off by zombies. This is commonly observed in 4 flag levels in Adventure Mode and Endless Zones, where they usually expire after two flags.

Trivia

• Before the 8.9.1 update, Boom Balloon Flower shared the same crosshair as Holly Barrier.
• Boom Balloon Flower is currently one of the few damage dealing plants that lacks Damage Pierce in its Mastery upgrades. Instead, she has Toughness Bonus, therefore she could get bruised even if she reaches Mastery 200.
• Boom Balloon Flower is currently the only plant to summon a cameo appearance of another plant with its Plant Food ability without actually turning into the plant itself.
  • Boom Balloon Flower is one of two plants outside of Plants vs. Zombies 3 to have an officially named Plant Food ability. The second one is Tiger Grass.
• Unlike Banana Launcher, but like Missile Toe, the player cannot control multiple Boom Balloon Flowers at once. If the player tries this, the Boom Balloon Flowers they tapped while controlling the original Boom Balloon Flower will become stuck and unusable.
  • This can be fixed by either digging up the Boom Balloon Flower or by using Plant Food on her.
• Unlike Banana Launcher and Missile Toe, Boom Balloon Flower can be planted on minecarts, despite being able to target any tile. This immobilizes the Minecart until Boom Balloon Flower has been removed.
