Power Vine is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 9.1.1 update. Being a vine plant, Power Vine is able to be planted over plants to occupy space in the same tile.

Power Vine attacks zombies by firing laser bolts at them which deals 10 damage every 1 second. Power Vine is able to connect to other Power Vines that are planted in an adjacent tile to him; connected Power Vines shoot three laser bolts instead of one, which deal a total of 30 damage. Each of the bolts are fired every 0.085 seconds.

Origins

Power Vine's name is a portmanteau of power line and vine.

The exact species of vine Power Vine is based on is never officially specified. Due to his turquoise color, berry-like head and antennae tips, leaf shape, and being a vine plant, he could possibly be based on the porcelain berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa brevipedunculata), a species of ornamental plant native to China, Japan, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Plant Food effect

When fed Plant Food, Power Vine will explode and disable all mechanical enemies in a 5x5 area (without 4 vertex tiles) around him for 5 seconds, similar to E.M.Peach, and spray wide waves of eleven laser bolts, with each bolt dealing 55 damage. When he is networked with another Power Vine, he sprays wide waves of eleven laser bolts three times. Additionally, when a plant is planted on top of him when activating his Plant Food effect, the plant on top will also activate its Plant Food effect.

Fila-mint effect

When boosted by Fila-mint, Power Vine will do an additional 55 damage, and his Plant Food effect will do an additional 80 damage.

Strategies

As stated by his Almanac entry, Power Vine shines most when linked up to other Power Vines, being capable of firing in 3-shot bursts that occur more frequently than a single projectile fired by a lone Power Vine. As such, it is recommended to have a full column of Power Vines to maximize the effect, as well as for sun efficiency. Additionally, if a Power Vine is transformed into a sheep or bound by an octopus, it does not interrupt the Power Vines' "networking," meaning that Power Vines are still useful in levels that contain Wizard Zombie or Octo Zombie.

Due to Power Vine's dependent nature, if there are many dangerous zombies that can destroy plants instantly or can move plants, such as Glitter Zombie, Mecha-Football Zombie, or Fisherman Zombie, they could easily disrupt the Power Vine's "network," meaning that the player shouldn't solely rely on them and use other hard-hitting plants to assist.

Power Vine's Plant Food effect allows him to disable all mechanical zombies next to him, similar to E.M.Peach. However, due to the more-limited range that this E.M.P. burst has, it should be used only as a last resort, since the maximum effect of Power Vine's Plant Food ability only occurs if there is at least one more Power Vine next to him, meaning that double the sun cost has to be used when attempting to use Power Vine's Plant Food effect far away from the left side of the lawn, compared to E.M.Peach's much cheaper cost and superior range.

Trivia

• In version 9.0 of the game, Power Vine was included on Fila-mint's list of family plants despite not being released yet.
• He is the only plant capable of firing in a 3-shot burst in a single lane in Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • If one were to consider all of the games, he is the fifth plant capable of firing in a 3-shot burst, the first being Citrus Cactus, the second being Sun Pharaoh, the third being Pops Corn, the fourth being shared by the AI Wildflower and its two variants.
  • Out of the above plants, he is the only plant not to be in a third-person shooter game.
• Glitter Zombie can kill Power Mints on Power Vine. This is a glitch.
• He and E.M.Peach are the only plants to disable mechanical zombies.
