Aqua Vine
“ | ” | |
Aqua Vine is a premium vine plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2, introduced in the 11.4.1 update for the "Aqua Vine" Arena Season.
It allows land plants to be planted over the water in Big Wave Beach and Puddles and aquatic plants on land, with its attack changing depending on what is planted in it, or where it's planted. The plant inside takes priority over its current environment.
If planted on land or over a land plant, Aqua Vine fires a high damaging blast of water to the first zombie in its lane, knocking them back one tile. The projectile cannot be blocked by an Excavator Zombie's Shovel or returned by Jester Zombies. Those killed by it are knocked off the lawn instantly if they proceed sufficiently far into the screen. Gargantuars, various General zombies (Cardio Zombie, etc), Zomboss and anything that doesn't move cannot be knocked back or tossed out of the lawn.
If planted on water or over an amphibious plant, Aqua Vine will instead fire a stream of water that pierces through all zombies in front of it.
Zombies damaged by its attacks will have a "wet" status effect applied to them, which is able to extinguish zombie fires except for Prospector Zombie's dynamite sticks.
Origins
The exact species of vine Aqua Vine is based on is never officially specified. However, the water cannon possessed by Aqua Vine heavily resembles members of the Nepenthes species of pitcher plants.

Upgrades
Plant Food effect
When fed with Plant Food, Aqua Vine will attract zombies to the lane its planted in, and release a piercing knockback wave that will also extinguish zombie fires. If planted on land or over a land plant, Aqua Vine will only attract zombies in a 3x3 area. If planted on water or over an amphibious plant, Aqua Vine will attract zombies across the entirety of both adjacent lanes.
Spear-mint effect
When boosted by Spear-mint, Aqua Vine will deal an additional 150/250/350/450/550/650/750/850/950/1050 damage with its normal land attacks, an additional 75/125/175/225/275/325/375/425/475/525 damage with its normal water attacks, and an additional 200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900/1000/1100 damage with its Plant Food land and water attacks.

Strategies
Aqua Vine is a versatile offense-oriented supportive plant that aims to maximize the value of tiles available to the player, and has his own utility elsewhere. He can practically replace the Lily Pad if owned, as he does possess all of the latter's capabilities, serving well in areas with lots of puddles or on water tiles in big Wave Beach. As he is amphibious himself, water plants will not be destroyed in low tide and will remain in commission for future onslaughts. An added bonus is his ability to extinguish flames on certain zombies with his attacks, greatly reducing the threat they pose.
Aqua Vine's most notable quality is his piercing water jet, which is substantially weaker than his single-target water blast but compensates with its excellent coverage, hitting every zombie ahead of him and bypassing all sorts of protection. It can quickly accumulate damage and wipe out groups of weak zombies in his lane or snipe frail ones behind enemy lines, notably Wizard Zombies, Turquoise Skull Zombies and to a lesser extent Octo Zombies. It also has no trouble getting past grid objects like Arcade Machines or Tombstones. The only issue presented by this attack is its requirement of water (or a water plant, if he is deployed on land), as he can take up valuable space when placed behind other plants, while putting him ahead reduces his coverage and may interfere with the use of melee plants.
Aqua Vine's single-target water blast shouldn't be ignored either, as it possesses a valuable knockback effect to delay zombies he couldn't kill, and deals more damage than his piercing stream. It is surprisingly dangerous, as while a couple of zombies are immune to his knockback, other plants could be reserved to counter them, and a few Aqua Vines have no difficulty juggling small numbers of strong zombies. While being a solid projectile prevents it from bypassing Shield Zombie's force field, it is not impeded by Jesters or Excavators, and is in fact devastatingly effective against Bug Zombies.

Trivia
- According to the official v11.4 release post on Reddit:
- "When not battling zombies, Aqua Vine spends most of its day exercising and training for the Iron-Plant competition. It's not easy to carry all those plants on its back."
- If a Zombie Parrot targets an Aqua Vine planted over a Sea-shroom, the Sea-shroom will disappear when the Aqua Vine supporting it is stolen.
- Rhubarbarian will not cross Aqua Vines planted in water, despite being able to be planted in them.
- SeaFlora planted on Aqua Vines are somehow not counted as being in water, being unable to hit the lanes above or below them.
- Aqua Vine's knockback doesn't make zombies susceptible to being blown away by Blover.
