Electric Currant
- Not to be confused with High-Voltage Currant, a plant in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes.
“ | ” | |
Electric Currant is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2, released with the 4.7.1 update. It was originally unlocked after completing the Electrical Boogaloo Epic Quest. It was available again as of January 9th, 2018, as a special-edition premium plant that costs 100 gems.
As of March 13th, 2021, Electric Currant is available to purchase at all times. It was also buffed on July 28, 2021, which was that Electric Currant can move zombies to adjacent lanes and push them back 0.5 tiles.
Overview
The Electric Currant has two ways to attack:
- It will create an electrical fence when connected to other Electric Currants, either horizontally or vertically. The electricity deals 40 damage every second to any zombie that passes through it, and will disappear when a node is removed by any means.
- When faced with zombies at melee range (on the same tile as itself), it will attack with an electric burst. The melee range attack deals 48 damage every 1.5 seconds, and does not disrupt the electrical field.
- In both previous attacks, it can also make zombies move to adjacent tiles and push them back 0.5 tiles.
- It can also divert zombies that eat it.
However, the following zombies are not affected by its knockback/move are:
- Barrel Zombie
- Imp Cannon
- Zombie Parrot
- Pianist Zombie
- Mecha-Football Zombie
- Zombie King
- Fisherman Zombie
- Zcorpion Zombie
Origins
Electric Currant is based on the redcurrant, (Ribes rubrum), also known as "red currant" in English, or possibly the fruit of the bilberry (Amelanchier canadensis), known as the "currant-tree" or more commonly the sugarplum, or it may even be in reference to the Zante currant also known as Corinthian raisins, or simply just "currants," a type of grape native to Corinth and the nearby island of Zakynthos.
Its name is a portmanteau of "electric current," a term for a flow of electricity, and "currant," the real-life plant it is based on.

Upgrades
Plant Food effect
When given Plant Food, Electric Currant strengthens both its melee damage and the damage of every electrical fence using the boosted plant as a node to 80 damage. Both abilities' attack speeds remain unchanged, though.
Fila-mint effect
When boosted by Fila-mint, Electric Currant will receive an additional 80 damage to its electrical field, and an additional 90 damage to its melee attack.

Strategies
Electric Currant is a very versatile plant. It has a damage output comparable to Spikerock for a fraction of the cost. Additionally, it has the added benefit of not taking up the spaces the electric gates are on, allowing it to double up its damage output against zombies in range of your walls and being able to better combo with field plants like Spikeweed, Potato Mine, Chili Bean, or Infi-nut. This also means the gates can't be countered by zombies Spikerock is vulnerable to, such as Gargantuars, Barrel Rollers, Excavators, or flying zombies. It even has an incredible plant food effect that will permanently double the damage output of an Electric Currant's gates.
However, this all comes with the noticeable drawback of not working well against zombies in its own lane, requiring another Electric Currant to be set up on the other side of the zombies to set up a fence, just for the plant to be heavily threatened. This creates a very present synergy between this plant and lane diverters like Garlic or Sweet Potato. You'll mainly want to use Garlic, as it diverts zombies more forward from your defensive range and allows a lot more Electric Currants to be set up in range behind it. Because of this, it's highly recommended to learn proper Garlic usage if one wants to utilize Electric Currant well.
On the topic of Electric Currant's powerful plant food effect, you should usually be using the first 2 plant foods given to your Electric Currants on the ones that have their gates in a range of zombies that will be eating at your walls. This is because they can cover the entirety of defense range with a single gate compared to needing multiple gates to cover the field range. However there's a very good way to give this sort of value to plant food-effected gates past your defensive range, and that's via secondary wall plants like Infi-nut or Holly Barrier's mini berries. Their walling capabilities offer the ability to hold zombies in range of a plant food gate like your primary walls but don't require you to divert the cost and recharge of your primary wall on less stable spaces, as walls positioned forward will naturally lose more health and be more at risk of wall counters like Explorers. It's also well advisable to bring Power Lily to set up even more plant food gates, especially since gaining plant food from a Power Lily is far more reliable than the ones that naturally drop from zombies.
Another aspect of Electric Currant's is the lane diversion it's received in modern versions of the game. While this isn't exactly great enough to replace the lane diverters you should be running with it, it's still enough to save you if you find yourself in a dire situation, so don't be afraid to use this as needed.

Trivia
Specific to Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Before version 5.7, Electric Currant, Imitater, and Marigold were the only plants to lack their Recharge section in the Almanac.
- However, unlike the other two, this plant lacked its Recharge section for unknown reasons. It was presumably due to an oversight in making the entry.
- When the Almanac stats were redesigned in version 5.7, this error was corrected.
- Additionally, the Almanac does not describe Electric Currant's second attack method, which is melee damage.
- It, Gold Bloom and Aloe were formerly the only plants obtainable through the completion of an Epic Quest.
- It, Sunflower, Sun-shroom, Primal Sunflower, Moonflower, Gold Bloom, Strong Acid Lemon and Power Mints are the only plants that are fully charged at the very start of the level.
- It, Cactus, Torchwood, Hypno-shroom and Sun Bean are the only plants that have their Plant Food last until they are destroyed.
- In Last Stand levels, it can be planted to destroy tombstones. Note that the current can only be damaged once, and the right/bottom Electric Currant should be planted first.
- It and Pea Pod are the only plants that can do this without being boosted.
- Its Epic Quest name, Electrical Boogaloo, is very similar to a zombie hero's name in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, Electric Boogaloo.
- There is a glitch involving this plant where if you plant it in columns, when a zombie steps into its field, the top Electric Currant will have its idle animation restarted, and will have it restarted every time the zombie is damaged by the field.
- Before version 6.6.1., despite the fact that its seed packet was in the style of Modern Day and Player's House, its background in the Almanac and seed selection was in the style of premium plants. This was also shared with other plants formerly obtained from Epic Quests.
- When the player has selected it and is about to plant it, its idle sounds can be heard. This also occurs in the Almanac.
- It is the only electric plant that does not have a mostly blue color scheme.
- If there is a plant other than Electric Currant between an electric fence, it will appear to be on the electric fence, not the ground.
- Electric Currant's featured Epic Quest had a visual error that made it say ...win 60 Electric Curran seed...
Specific to Plants vs. Zombies 2 (Chinese version) (China only)
- Its seed packet is different from the international version.
- The seed packet is aligned to the middle instead of the left and is zoomed in on Electric Currant slightly.
- Its Level 5 ability (melee attack) is very similar to Phat Beet and Gloom-shroom, especially Electrici-tea, as they are both electrical plants.
