Puffball is a premium plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 that was introduced in the 8.2.1 update. He explodes when planted and poisons zombies in three columns. Zombies damaged by the poison will also be momentarily stunned, and planting multiple Puffballs will stack poison effects.

Origins

Calvatia cyathiformis

Puffball is based on, and named after, the puffball, a type of fungi which are known for bursting upon maturity and dispersing copious amounts of airborne spores.

Puffball's purple coloration makes him more specifically resemble a purple-spored puffball, (Calvatia cyathiformis), a large edible saprobic species of Calvatia mushrooms.

His poisonous effect for zombies is due to the fact that some puffballs are poisonous.

When boosted by Ail-mint, Puffball's poison will gain an additional 275 damage and his stun duration is increased by 10 seconds.

Strategies

Like all other poisonous plants, Puffball's main role in the player's arsenal is to counter armored enemies by bypassing their armor altogether and damage them directly. Out of the all these, Puffball is often far superior in its niche, as its poison effect can be stacked indefinitely and can't expire.

However, Puffball's lengthy cooldown to deal full damage makes it a poor choice against high health enemies without armor, in particular mechanical enemies and Gargantuars. Healer Zombie and Zombie Medusa are immune to poison effects, with Healer being able to remove poison effects. As such, Puffball may not be useful over another instant that can actually kill them.

Compared with other instant-use plants, such as Cherry Bomb or Jalapeno, Puffball can't hit grid objects, but take less time to recharge and has more range. He can also easily kill Imp Dragon Zombies, but that's mostly irrelevant with the main niche of poison plants being specialized to counter zombies with armored headwear.

Due to him being an instant use plant, Puffball shouldn't be brought into levels with a plant loss limit.
