Buttercup is a Common Wall plant introduced in Plants vs. Zombies 3. She costs 1 sun and blocks Zombies in a similar manner to Wall-Nut, but zombies that attack Buttercup get buttered and thus get stunned.

However, her health is rather low when compared to other Wall plants such as Wall-Nut.

Origins

Buttercup is based on the buttercup flower. Her ability, to butter zombies, references the plant's name, the Buttercup.

She has a leafy handle that resembles the handle of a cup, referring to the cup part of Buttercup

Buttercup's Tacobility references the song "Build Me Up Buttercup" by the Foundations.

Upgrades

Plant Food effect

Buttercup's Plant Food ability is called Drizzled Butter, in which Buttercup will pour butter down the lane she is on, pushing back nearby zombies, and leaving butter puddles which immobilize zombies when touched.

Tacobility

Buttercup's Tacobility is called Build Me Up, in which Buttercup will gain stacks of armor, as well as damaging zombies when she butters them.

Strategies

Although Buttercup is a Wall plant, unlike most of her fellow Wall plants, she is not recommended to be used as a direct defense from the zombie horde, as she has rather low health. Instead, her rather quick recharge and low sun cost allow her to stall zombies effectively, giving you time to focus on other rows and reinforce defenses in them.

Buttercup can also work as a cheap blocker to some other threats such as the Donut Roller or Plunger Zombie, as it is not exactly a plant that you would want to prioritize defending. It also deals slight damage, so it can somewhat be used to finish off zombies.

Buttercup's plant food drizzles butter down her lane to stun a few zombies there. It can be effective if a swarm of zombies is coming like Zombie Chickens, but otherwise is not too effective and would be considered a bad use of Plant Food, where a more offensive plant if your lineup could deal more devastating damage.

Buttercup's Tacobility gives her armor, which means more stalling the zombies, but due to Buttercup eventually getting eaten due to her low health, this is not suggested.

Effective Plant Combos

Buttercup + Aloe Vera: Buttercup and Aloe Vera can be a very effective combo for maximum stalling. Aloe Vera heals Buttercup as she gets bitten by the zombies, stunning the zombies, giving Buttercup time to heal.

Balancing changes

• ▼ Cooldown increased from 17 to 25 seconds.

Breakout Tips (Quotes)

• I'd tell you a rumor about butter on some toast, but you might spread it.
• I'm a butter choice than Wall-Nut against zombies that attack fast for low damage. Every time they attack, they get buttered!
• I was going to churn out some butter jokes, but there's too much margarine for error.
• Putting an early Wall in front of a Taco Imp will really get it out of its Stealthy shell, tee-hee! (Taco Imp's tip)

Trivia

• Buttercup can randomly giggle at times while her leaves cover her mouth. This did not happen in most of the game's Pre-Alpha.
