Gloom Vine
“ | ” | |
Gloom Vine is a premium shadow plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2, introduced in the 8.7.1 update for the "Gloom Vine's Glorious" Arena Season.
He is a vine plant who is able to attack zombies in 8 different directions every second, similar to Gloom-shroom and Phat Beet.
Upon planting, Gloom Vine will also create a shadow-boosting aura like Moonflower's in his tile, allowing Gloom Vine to individually power any shadow plants planted within him. Because of this, he is an environment modifier.
Origins
Gloom Vine gets his appearance and name from the Gloom-shroom, a plant from the original Plants vs. Zombies with a similar attack.
The exact species of vine Gloom Vine is based on is never officially specified.

Strategies
Like Conceal-mint, Gloom Vine comes in handy in levels that Moonflower is not allowed in such as Last Stand levels as he'll activate the shadow plants' powered mode planted within without the help of Moonflower. With the help of the Gloom Vine, Dusk Lobber, Nightshade, Grimrose and Shadow Peashooter will be better against zombies. However, Gloom Vine does not cooperate well with Shadow-shroom or Murkadamia Nut, as both require the plant contained within to be destroyed or damaged for their abilities to take effect, and Gloom Vine is always destroyed first, causing them to lose their enhancements. Shadow Peashooter doesn't work well with Gloom Vine, as he hides when a zombie comes within the Gloom Vine's effective range, and he always only throws the shadow bomb tier 1 when given Plant Food if there are no Moonflowers or Conceal-mints on the lawn, no matter how many Gloom Vines have been planted. Moonflower is also unaffected by the Gloom Vine herself despite counting as a Shadow Plant for sun production purposes.
Besides powering shadow plants, Gloom Vine himself will also attack zombies in a 3x3 area, similar to Gloom-shroom from first game and Phat Beet, and thus he shares his strengths and weaknesses with them - namely, an extremely high damage potential hampered by a lack of range. It is very effective in the rightmost columns to keep the far end of the lawn tame. Also, Gloom Vine can be fairly powerful with the help of Sweet Potato or Garlic, but if you use it in Frostbite Caves, Hot Date is also a good option. Like Phat Beets, Gloom Vines can be planted in the second and fourth lanes with a Sweet Potato or Hot Date on the remaining ones. That way, the zombies will be attracted to the Sweet Potatoes, and they will have to walk alongside Gloom Vines dealing damage, which remain safe from being killed. Of course, Sweet Potatoes, Garlic, and Hot Date will require replacement eventually. For more damage, Spikeweed or Spikerock can be planted near the Sweet Potatoes.
Like Phat Beet, Gloom Vine is useful against the Imps thrown by Gargantuars, especially in Endless Zones in higher levels. He works well in numbers and against them, giving it utility. Sadly, Gloom Vine is very vulnerable to the Gargantuars themselves, and players should be cautious when taking on Gargantuars with Gloom Vine.
In Ancient Egypt and Dark Ages, Gloom Vine can be useful for clearing out tombstones if planted in the middle of a big group of them. In Wild West, Gloom Vine is useful to put on minecarts. Combined with Sweet Potato, Gloom Vine can cause great damage to the zombies, including Zombie Chickens or be placed near the back of the lawn to combat Prospector Zombies.
In Big Wave Beach, Gloom Vine is useful against Octo Zombies, since a group of them can quickly kill his thrown octopus and free the trapped plant. In addition, Gloom Vine is a good plant against low tides, especially if Magnet-shroom is used against Pompadour and Bikini Buckethead. Gloom Vine's attacks can damage Snorkel Zombie, even when submerged. In Frostbite Caves, ice floes should be used to one's advantage to create an effective strategy with Gloom Vine as long as there are no Weasel Hoarders or Dodo Rider Zombies, as Ice Weasels and Dodo Riders fly over the slider tiles, and he can't kill them in one attack.
Both in normal levels and Endless Zone, Gloom Vine works well with Winter Melon or Sap-fling because they can slow down the zombies as Gloom Vine attacks. Spikerock can also be used in conjunction with devastating effect.
Gloom Vine's Plant Food effect should be used only in large waves near it or you will waste a Plant Food.
Gloom Vine works great in combination with Homing Thistle in a checkered pattern and is effective in most worlds. The Homing Thistle can take out zombies from far range and Gloom Vines will thump out damage from close range, covering all ranges. The only problem with this strategy is the fact that Homing Thistles will only fire at the closest zombie and it is weak on its own, so many more would be required for maximum effect.
Like in the first game, gloomwalks are a potential strategy, and they are even more effective with the use of Electric Currant, who can be planted on the same square as Gloom Vine.

Trivia
- Gloom Vine and Conceal-mint are the only shadow plants that don't have an unpowered form.
- Coincidentally, they both power other shadow plants.
- Glitter Zombie can kill Power Mints on Gloom Vine. This is a glitch.
- According to the game designer, Gloom Vine serves as a replacement and an upgrade for Gloom-shroom, as another plant can be planted over it.[1]
