Explode-o-Vine
“ | ” | |
Explode-o-Vine is a vine plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 that was first introduced in the 8.3.1 update alongside with Murkadamia Nut. He is an explosive counterpart to Pumpkin in a similar manner to how Explode-O-Nut is to Wall-nut.
When planted, Explode-o-Vine releases an explosion that deals 900 damage in a 3x3 area. When Explode-o-Vine is eaten, he will explode and deal 1800 damage to zombies in a 3x3 area. His on-planting damage is half of his death damage. Zombies are knocked back (for approximately 0.8 tiles) after any of his explosions.
Origins
Explode-o-Vine is based on and named after Explode-O-Nut as well as being based on Pumpkin.
Though the exact type of vine Explode-o-Vine is based on is never directly stated, his explosive abilities may be based on the Ecballium elaterium, otherwise known as the "Exploding cucumber vine", gourd vines whose fruits contains pressured fluids and seeds that release upon ripening.

Overview
Explode-o-Vine absorbs 1500 damage and his appearance changes upon at 750 damage before being eaten at 1500 damage. His plant food armor shares the same degrade values.
Upgrades
Plant Food effect
When fed Plant Food, Explode-o-Vine will produce an explosion and gain a armor piece which is capable of absorbing 1500 damage or one Gargantuar smash. When the armor is destroyed, it explodes again. Both of the explosions do 1800 damage. The plant that the Explode-o-Vine surrounds will also activate their Plant Food ability.
The damage from the explosion when the boost starts stacks with the on-planting damage.
Bombard-mint effect
When boosted by Bombard-mint, Explode-o-Vine will deal an additional 1200 damage with his planting explosions, an additional 2400 damage with his other explosions, his explosion knockback is adjusted to level 10 standards, and his Plant Food shield HP is increased to 3000 damage.

Strategies
Explode-o-Vine's perk is very similar to Explode-O-Nut. Both of them aren't as tough compared to specialized defensive plants in exchange for a shorter recharge and additional offensive attributes. The difference is that Explode-o-Vine has less durability, but provides an additional explosion when planted, and since he is a vine, he can conserve space for other plants. Some zombies will make Explode-o-Vine explode by using their abilities like Barrel Roller Zombie, Pianist Zombie or a Gargantuar. Otherwise, he can explode as if he was a delayed time bomb that can only count down if zombies attempt to destroy him. The only exception is Explorer Zombie and Torchlight Zombie, but only if their torch is still lit, and Super-Fan Imp exploding. In that case, as they have low health, the plant's initial explosion can instantly kill them.
The player should be aware of the Mecha-Football Zombie, as he can push Explode-o-Vine to the left tile instead of detonating him. This also applies to Excavator Zombie, Ankylosaurus and Fisherman Zombie. Attacks that can transform or neutralize plants such as Wizard Zombie, Octo Zombie, and Hunter Zombie are also a threat. Also, be cautious of Imp Dragon Zombies as they are immune to the explosion, although not to its knockback effect.
Explode-o-Vine also make a viable choice in Endless Zone levels, especially in Highway to the Danger Room, he can replace Pumpkin to protect plants at the third column. Though he is obviously less durable, he can provide two additional explosions, thus making plant the Explode-o-Vine surrounds safer, as he will explode when eaten, killing the attacking zombie, whereas for Pumpkin you need another plant to defend. In Highway to the Danger Room, he's able to shut down large hordes of Newspaper Zombies, All-Star Zombies, and dangerous threats that spawn through the portal, such as Jester Zombie, Pianist Zombie, and Barrel Roller Zombie, as don't have enough health to even survive his on-planting damage.
Beware of Explorer Zombies, though, as they can be spawned through their respective world portal and quickly burn Explode-o-Vine without triggering his explosion. The vine's fast recharge also helps, being able to keep up with the pace of the game. Pairing Explode-o-Vine with Shrinking Violet can destroy even the Jurassic/Gladiator Gargantuar assuming that they take damage from both of his attacks. Be careful though, since the explosion does not trigger instantly after he is defeated, zombies can make use of this interval to trample the flowers or attack the plant he was meant to protect.
Feeding Plant Food to Explode-o-Vine is useful, as he will provide two additional explosions, four explosions in total, dealing 6300 damage (being able to kill a Jurassic Gargantuar or Gladiator Gargantuar). A good way to use Explode-o-Vine is with Sweet Potato or Hot Date to group zombies up and provide extra defense to the plant.
Explode-o-Vine works really well with Blover, as knocked-back zombies are considered airborne threats and can be instantly killed, provided if they survive his attack. The only time this doesn't apply is if the Contain-Mint family is nerfed in Arena.
DO NOT use an Explode-o-Vine on Explorer Zombie and Torchlight Zombie if their torches are extinguished by ice-based plants. It only reignites their torches and burn it instantly without triggering the explosion if it's planted in front of them.
Explode-o-Vine can be used to counter Jurassic Rockpunchers, since he can inflict major damage (his two natural explosions deal just the amount the zombie can absorb), and does not leave a crater behind.

Trivia
- Explode-o-Vine's name is spelled "Explode-O-Vine" multiple times in-game.
- If you look closely in the advertisements for Explode-o-Vine, Puffball's shadow can be seen. This is most likely unintentional.
- He is the only Vine Plant that is intended to be destroyed for his abilities to take effect.
- The plant is able to be healed with Wall-Nut First Aid as his eyes degrade when damaged. However, it is a bad idea as his on-planting effect doesn't trigger when he is planted this way.
- He also absorbs the second highest amount of damage compared to other vines, at 1500. Most other vines absorb 300 damage at base while Pumpkin takes 4000 damage.
- Unlike Explode-O-Nut, he will not trigger the explosion if Surfer Zombie crushes him with his surfboard. This may be a glitch.
- Ironically, he can be burned without exploding, despite him having a fuse-like tail.
- Dead zombies' bodies can be knocked back with his explosions.
- Gargantuars used to be able to destroy both Explode-o-Vine and his armor in only one hit. This was a glitch fixed in the 9.0.1 update.
- Explode-o-Vine was the only plant that could affect Ice Bloom's ice blocks and Zomboids, as well as the turkeys from Turkey-pult.
- In this case, he pushed them forward.
- However, as of update 9.2.1 onwards, Zomboids and Turkeys are immune to its knockback effect.
- If the ice blocks get pushed into the water in Pirate Seas, they will fall down and disappear.
- Glitter Zombie can kill Power Mints on Explode-o-Vine. This is a glitch.
