Gladiator Gargantuar is a Gargantuar variant encountered in Penny's Pursuit. The Gladiator Gargantuar has various differences from other world-based Gargantuars, having the ability to throw a Roman Imp, which drops a net on a plant once he lands, disabling the targeted plant for the next 10 seconds. His helmet also provides extra health, and he is slightly faster than other Gargantuars. He and Jurassic Gargantuar are tied as the strongest Gargantuar variants in Plants vs. Zombies 2.

Strategies

Gladiator Gargantuar is a very dangerous zombie that can easily mess up your defenses. Not only does he have a net, but also throws a Roman Imp that has more health than other Imps. The icing on the cake is that as long as he managed to throw the imp, the net will entangle a plant regardless if the imp is blown away or not.

When facing the Gladiator Gargantuar, opt for robust plants to bolster your defense. Consider stalling him with resilient choices like Gumnut and Primal Wall-nut. In scenarios without Healer Zombies, attempt to hypnotize him using Caulipower. Dealing with Healer Zombies complicates hypnosis, but exploiting their frailty allows for the use of instant kills. Another effective tactic involves utilizing plants that briefly lift zombies into the air, such as Primal Peashooter, in combination with Blover or Draftodil to swiftly eliminate him.

Bombard-mint and her family contain a wide array of instants that can kill him in 2-3 hits, though these will have to be used wisely to prevent him from throwing the Imp. Another way to easily defeat him is by shrinking him, which prevents him from throwing the Imp and weakens him enough that a Squash is sufficient.

Avoid doing Spicy or Extra Hot difficulty if you have weak plants in Penny's Pursuit since like any other zombie, his health increases with difficulty, eventually skyrocketing beyond belief.

Trivia

• Unlike other Gargantuar variants, the Gladiator Gargantuar does not fall over immediately when defeated and will stagger forward for less than a second. It is unknown if this is a glitch or not.
• Most instant kill zombies deal 1500 damage, however the Gladiator Gargantuar deals 1875.
• His Almanac entry references the I've got an X, and I'm not afraid to use it! stock phrase.
• Gladiator Gargantuar and Head Office Impgantuar are the only Gargantuar variants in Plants vs. Zombies 2 to not feature their "Special" and "Damage" sections in their almanac entries.
  • Coincidentally, them alongside Vase Gargantuar are the only Gargantuar variants in the game not to originate from any world.
