Roman Shield Zombies are zombies that will appear in groups of two to three zombies, carrying shields in front of them or above their heads. They are encountered only in the mode Penny's Pursuit. They behave quite similar to the Camel Zombies encountered in Ancient Egypt, but the Roman Shield Zombies have more health. Some Roman Shield Zombies appear carrying shields over their heads instead, blocking all lobbed projectiles in a similar manner to Surfer Zombie.

Overview

Each normal shield zombie takes 1050 damage to destroy, degrading at 850 damage (when the shield is lost), at 950 damage (when the zombie loses its arm) and at 1050 damage (when the zombie is defeated). Zombies that carry the shield above their heads take 500 damage to destroy, degrading at 300 (when the shield is lost), 400 (when the zombie loses its arm) and 500 (when the zombie is defeated).

Strategies

This zombie acts similarly as Camel Zombies when he's not raising up his shield. You can use Bloomerangs to damaging them once they're two or three zombies.

When he's raising up his shield, he's acting similarly to Surfer Zombie and Parasol Zombie, which is blocking any lobbed-shot projectiles. In these instances, use straight shooting plants such as Repeater, Red Stinger, or Snow Pea.

Using Shadow-shroom is also recommended to poison multiple Roman Shield Zombies on the lawn. Also, by using Plant Food on Shadow-shroom is also recommended to poison all zombies on the lawn, making the whole level much easier.

Trivia

• If these zombies are spawned by a Zcorpion Zombie's vase, instead of being in a group, only one zombie will spawn.
• The Shields they carry have unused degrades in their spritesheets.
• Like Camel Zombies, the Roman Shield Zombie seen in the Almanac is tecnically a different zombie, internally named roman_shield_almanac.
• Both Roman Shield Pairs and Triads have fully unused Almanac Entries.
• Roman Top Shield has some remains from Surfer Zombie, evidenced by waist sprites and his unused animation of crushing plants with his shield.
