Magician Zombie is a zombie in Plants vs. Zombies 2 encountered in the Backyard Big Top Thymed Events. He can teleport zombies and himself with his wand and summon doves from his top hat.

Origins

He is based on a magician, a person who practices and performs magic, one of the oldest performing arts in the world where the audiences are entertained by stage tricks or illusions.

His ability to summon doves is a reference to the magic effect, the dove pan, a magic effect where a magician produces a dove from an empty pan.

His description references the phrase, "A magician never reveals their secrets", a typical phrase which is a polite refusal by someone who performed a magic trick to see how it works.

Overview

Magician Zombie absorbs 555 damage per shot and his appearance changes at 277.5 dps (when he loses his arm) before dying at 555 damage per shot.

He is immune to Enchant-mint-family plants', Thyme Warp's, and Spore-shroom's abilities.

His teleportation ability cannot be used on the following zombies:

Strategies

By himself, he is an extremely minor threat, as he can easily be taken out before summoning Zombie Doves or teleporting zombies. However, his main strength shows when appearing in groups. His primary ability, teleporting zombies, can put some pressure into the player as the teleported zombie can destroy your plants or walk in an empty lane and trigger a lawn mower. If he teleports a defensive zombie, their massive health can give the Magician Zombie more opportunities to summon his Zombie Doves or teleport more zombies. Best case scenario is to kill the Magician Zombie as quickly as possible before he can teleport zombies. If this cannot be prevented, then placing Pumpkins on top of your plants can be done to avoid as many eaten plants as possible. Knocking the teleported zombies back will also work, as doing it can make the Magician Zombie vulnerable to any impending attack.

Magician Zombie's doves, while frailer than Zombie Parrots, can be summoned in up to groups of seven, allowing Magician Zombie to potentially take out more than one plant in one fell swoop. If the doves perch on top of your plants, immediately place a Blover, Hurrikale, Boingsetta, or any instant explosive plant near them to kill them instantly; Note that Zombie Doves are able to steal plants at double the speed a Zombie Parrot can, so the timing is much quicker. It's also worth noting that the doves target the most recently planted plants, allowing them to threaten the back line, unlike Zombie Parrot which targets the first applicable plant in a row.

Both of his abilities are at their deadliest when he appears in Save Our Seeds levels. His teleportation ability can allow stronger zombies to eat your endangered plants, and his doves can immediately cause a game over if not taken care of eventually. If the former happens, use Pumpkins or similar vines to protect your plants from the inside, knock them back with plants such as Chard Guard, or teleport them back with Hocus Crocus. If it's the latter, use Blover, Hurrikale, Draftodil, or Boingsetta to get rid of them.

Freezing the Magician Zombie immediately after appearing in the lawn works as an easy counter, as it leaves Magician Zombie helpless while your plants wittle down his health.

Note that just like Healer Zombie, he is immune to certain magical effects, making plants such as Witch Hazel or Hypno-shroom ineffective against him. Also note that unlike Healer Zombie, he can be inflicted with poison, allowing plants like Shadow-shroom to hurt him.

Trivia

• If he is tossed away by Power Toss while about to teleport himself, it can crash the game.
• His teleportation reuses Z-Mech's sounds and textures.
• His Spanish name, Zombi mago, is identical to Wizard Zombie's Spanish name, which is also Zombi mago.
• There is a 5% chance for Magician Zombie to accidentally incinerate a zombie while teleporting them.
• Magician Zombie is currently the only Backyard Big Top zombie to be ported into the Chinese version, via the Magic Hat Artifact.
  • Interestingly, the version of Magician it summons is a different zombie internally. The original Magician is also in the files, but goes completely unused.
