Bamboo Shoot (竹笋; pinyin: Zhúsǔn) is a plant in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 which is tied to Kongfu World. When a zombie is within four tiles in front of him, he will burrow into the ground and start attacking by moving through the ground up to four tiles.

He cannot be eaten by zombies. However, any rolling zombie can run over him, destroying him in the process (like Spikeweed). Certain zombies such as Gargantuars are also able to destroy Bamboo Shoot by crushing his starting point. Since the 1.2 update to the game, the plant behaves differently — he only damages one group of zombies four tiles away from him.

When fed Plant Food, he will hit the last zombies in each line (and any zombies in that tile as well) in a similar fashion to Rafflesia from the same game, BoomBerry from the international version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 and Carrot Rocket and Pineapple-pult from Plants vs. Zombies Online. If their health is low enough, they will be flung off the screen.

Strategies

Bamboo Shoot is a weak attacking plant, as despite his AoE (Area of Effect), he does low damage and can only fend off Basic Zombies, meaning he should not be used as the main attacking plant. Because of this, it is recommended to support him with other area-of-effect plants like Snapdragon or Bearberry Mortar, and a strong defensive plant like Primal Wall-nut or Wax Gourd Guard, as he is not very strong. You can use him in case there are barrels from Barrel Crisis in Memory Lane, or if a Barrel Roller Zombie or a Pianist Zombie appears since he works like Spikeweed and Spikerock.

Do not use Plant Food on him unless he is costumed and upgraded, otherwise, he simply is not worth to use his Plant Food. It is futile to use this plant to combat any flying zombies since he is grounded (albeit it’s possible for his Plant Food effect to hit flying zombies). Using slowing plants like Snow Pea, Stallia, Sap-fling and especially Winter Melon is useful, because they can slow the zombies down so he can attack them for more time.

An effective way to use Bamboo Shoot is by leveling him up. At level 2, Bamboo Shoot can be used to stall zombies, as he gains a chance to knock them back. Having him at level 3 increases the chances. This means that if you plant 2 columns of level 3 Bamboo Shoots, it can be used as a stalling and damage tool. This can help the player to farm sun to plant expensive attacking plants, such as Flame Flower Queen, Orchid Mage and Winter Melon.

However, he is outclassed by better AoE plants. Examples include Fume-shroom, because he costs 50 less sun and does more damage. His Plant Food also outclasses Bamboo Shoot's, as it can push zombies to the end of the lawn and do a sheer amount of damage to them, or Cactus, as she does more damage than Bamboo Shoot while also costing the same amount of sun and being immune to almost everything, but the biggest example is Laser Bean as he has full lane range and does more damage, all for 25 more sun than Bamboo Shoot. Although, Bamboo Shoot has advantages over these plants, as his level-ups can knock zombies back and is immune to most attacks, meaning he can be placed at the frontline without any problems.

Trivia

• As he is rooted to the ground, he cannot be planted on wooden planks in Pirate Seas, in minecarts in Wild West, and cannot be used at all in Sky City (although he can be used in the boss level of said world).
  • However, he can still travel on to the planks when attacking, despite still being underground.
• Before the 1.2 update, he attacked zombies by spinning around himself back and forth, and he could damage all targets in his range twice per attack akin to Bloomerang. Now, he attacks zombies by simply popping himself from the ground up to four tiles and immediately return to his starting point and only damages targets once per attack.
• His almanac entry references a fictional character called Tuxing Sun (lit. Soilwalker Sun), who appears in the Chinese epic novel The Investiture of the Gods.
• In his almanac entry, the term 学士(bachelor) is intentionally switched to 学土 as a pun, replacing the character 士(a suffix referencing a senior stratum) to 土(soil).
• According to Landlord Bamboo’s almanac entry, he’s his grandson.
  

  Bamboo Shoot in Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars
• Bamboo Shoot was planned to make an appearance in the Chinese exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, where he would attack all zombies three tiles ahead of him. It is unknown why Bamboo Shoot's appearance in this game was scrapped.
