Rhubarbarian is a melee plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 9.7.1 update for the Rhubarbarian's Savage Arena season. It is an invincible instant plant with a limited lifespan that automatically seeks out and attacks targets. When planted, Rhubarbarian will stun zombies in a 3x3 area before it begins attacking. Its punches can stun zombies or even instantly remove smaller ones from play. If no targets are in range, Rhubarbarian will somersault forwards and continue fighting whatever it encounters, with a detection range of 4.5 tiles.

Origins

Rhubarbarian is based on the rhubarb (Rhenum hybridum), a plant with fleshy edible stalks in the knotweed family Polygonaceae. It is a pun between "rhubarb" and "barbarian" used to denote a person in ancient times a member of a community or tribe not belonging to one of the great civilizations or an uncultured or brutish person, referring to how it literally weaponizes its brute strength to great effect.

"My drive to punch things? Inescapable!" exults Rhubarbarian. "That tree over there? PUNCH IT! That mailbox? SPLINTERS! Your coffee club punch card? LET ME AT THAT THING!"

Strategies

Rhubarbarian is a time-effective melee plant. Although it is a melee plant, it is more flexible. Its invulnerability means it has more output opportunities than other melee plants to approach and engage threats. Its melee strikes are extremely dangerous, as they can constantly fling smaller zombies off the lawn, neutralizing them instantly regardless of health. This makes it much more sustainable in Penny's Pursuit and Arena where overbuffed zombies can easily render melee plants ineffective. Even if a zombie, such as a Gargantuar, is unable to be killed instantly, Rhubarbarian can still deal a fair bit of damage to it Rhubarbarian can deal a total of 1790 damage (including the damage caused by its planting) during its lifetime. This damage can be increased to 51360 after being upgraded and strengthened by Enforce-mint. Rhubarbarian does suffer from having a slow recharge, but this can be negated with Imitater or spending one Plant Food with the Instant Recharge upgrade.

Rhubarbarian is not suitable for some levels, such as Big Wave Beach or Pirate Seas, because it cannot jump into the water, which limits its attack ability. Meanwhile, it cannot jump to the grid occupied by plants or obstacles, although it is capable of attacking and destroying said obstacles. Rhubarbarian can also be combined with Escape Root and Sweet Potato/Garlic/Hot Date. Escape Root can bring Rhubarbarian to other rows to solve the zombie crisis of multiple rows, while Sweet Potato/Garlic/Hot Date can gather zombies in the same row to facilitate the increase of the number of zombies that Rhubarbarian can solve at one time. Rhubarbarian can slightly prolong its lifespan (or temporarily stop the loss of its lifespan) every time it tosses zombies off.

In general, Rhubarbarian has rich functions and novel mechanisms. In many cases, it is an excellent plant. It can even be compared to a Lawn Mower.

Trivia

• Rhubarbarians have the same stun effect (a halo that surrounds the zombie's head) as Blockoli's.
• Rhubabarian reuses the same spinning animation of Tumbleweed.
• When he appears on the lawn, an electrical guitar riff can be heard.
• Despite not having a Plant Food ability, it has an animation for being watered in the Zen Garden. The animation can be seen when it is ready to level up.
  • It, Puffball, Ice Bloom, Heath Seeker, and Teleportato Mine are the only instant use plants released after Far Future to have this distinction.
