But you can just call me Crazy Dave.
Lawn Mower has different capitalization or spelling depending on what game it is in. When editing, use the term used in the game in question.
For the version in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, see Lawnmower.

Lawn Mowers (lawn mowers in Plants vs. Zombies 2) is a recurring mechanic and the player's last line of defense.

When a zombie gets too close to their house with the lawn mower still in position, it will activate and proceed out of the lawn, destroying most zombies on contact.

In Plants vs. Zombies 3, the Lawn Mower is replaced with Mo.

Strategies

Plants vs. Zombies

There is not much strategy to this, except to conserve your Lawn Mowers. However, do not waste plants to try and (fruitlessly) prevent your Lawn Mowers from being used up, especially in a level's final wave where they can be used to catch all zombies in the same row. If it is the last wave, and you have Lawn Mowers in every row with zombies (and/or the Pool Cleaners and Roof Cleaners), you may win the level. However, it is a bad idea to depend on them, as they give you money, along with the Pool Cleaners and Roof Cleaners. Using a Garlic effectively, you can move zombies towards lanes with them or away from rows if you are missing one. Once zombies start dropping money in Level 2-1, the player gets $50 for every unused Lawn Mower at the end of each level.

The Lawn Mower is available on the water lanes for Pool and Fog levels. However, it will sink immediately on activation and can only cover the first column of its respective lane, necessitating the purchase of Pool Cleaners for full coverage. It does not appear on the Roof at all, and Roof Cleaners must be acquired separately.

A full complement of Lawn Mowers, Pool Cleaners and Roof Cleaners are automatically provided at the start of all levels with select exceptions. They cannot be replaced in-game and are lost permanently for the level after deployment.

Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (Archived content)

Like its predecessor, Lawn Mowers are used as a last defense. However, Lawn Mowers do not follow the path zombies can take, but rather a straight path from where it is activated, and may not end up killing every zombie in a lane. Additionally, if the player plays a level they have already passed, Lawn Mowers will not be present, but the player must use the Lawn Mower boost to regain them. Any knocked-out plant along an activated Lawn Mower's route will be revived instantly if it has recovered completely.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

The use of lawn mowers is similar to the use in Plants vs. Zombies, as a last line of defense to wipe out threatening zombies. Each unused lawn mower is converted to $10 at the end of each level in adventure mode. This does not apply to Thymed Events, Penny's Pursuit, Arena and Pinata Parties.

As the lawn resets between each level in Endless Zones, it is now possible to restore lawn mowers after deployment if the player is offered a chance to do so after completing a level, causing a random missing lane to regain its respective lawn mower. There is no technical limit to the number of mower recoveries that can be done.

Since version 2.1, the Mower Launch upgrade can be used to preemptively deploy one mower per level, which can be helpful if the zombies prove overwhelming.

In Arena, players have infinite lawn mowers and mower launch still works. However, lawn mowers do not reward any points when defeating zombies, and each deployed lawn mower incurs a massive score penalty.

In Penny's Pursuit stages, the amount of lawn mowers available is dependent on difficulty. Some may have an infinite supply of them, others will have anywhere from 0-2 available per lane.

Lawn mowers possess certain limitations under various circumstances:

  • It is possible for lawn mowers to hit flying zombies as always. However, they cannot cover plankless lanes in Pirate Seas and will sink immediately.
  • Some zombies that produce additional ones when destroyed or damaged may spawn threats behind the lawn mower, such as Chicken Wrangler Zombies and Carnie Imp Twins.
  • Lawn mowers will not interact with certain types of grid objects, such as Frozen Blocks and Tombstones.
  • Zombot Multi-stage Masher takes up all five lanes and can block all Lawn Mowers, instantly destroying them without taking any damage. This however isn't an issue in practice, as zombies end up appearing in front of it anyways.

Trivia

Specific to Plants vs. Zombies

  • By design and purpose, the Lawn Mower pays homage to the Peter Jackson movie Braindead, where the protagonist Lionel Cosgrove starts up an almost identical model in his arms before shredding zombies by plunging its spinning blade into them.
  • Lawn Mowers are more powerful than most instant kill plants, as they can kill even a Giga-gargantuar in one hit.
    • The only weapon that is even more powerful is the Giant Wall-nut in Wall-nut Bowling 2. If Dr. Zomboss is hacked to appear in that minigame, a single Giant Wall-nut will destroy him in one hit. The Lawn Mower does not affect Zomboss.
  • If the player types "trickedout" while playing, Lawn Mowers will be redecorated as engines with aftermarket components.
  • Its absence on Roof levels could be explained by its weight distribution.
  • As with Pool Cleaners and Roof Cleaners, the Lawn Mower will slow down briefly upon contact with a Zombie.
  • The only land zombies that will die in a different way instead of being squashed are the Zomboni, the Catapult Zombie, the Zombie Bobsled Team (in their bobsleds), the Gargantuar, and the Giga-gargantuar. Instead of being crushed and run over, they explode and turn into a puff of smoke. In other cases, some zombies are sucked inside or simply despawn with no animation.
  • In most modes, when a Lawn Mower has been activated, the zombies will not enter that lane for a while. It is probably to give the player enough time to recover their plant defenses from that lane. Also, if all Lawn Mowers, Pool Cleaners, or Roof Cleaners are used shortly before the final wave except for one, the final wave is only in a single row, making all zombies a very easy target for the Jalapeno.
    • This also applies to the Zomboss battle, if the Roof Cleaner is triggered by a zombie. If there is only one left, Zomboss will put everything in a single row and Jalapeno can be used to wipe them out. However, if it is destroyed by a fireball or iceball, zombies will continue getting deployed there.
  • In the online version of Plants vs. Zombies, zombies will turn into a puff of smoke once they get hit by a Lawn Mower.
  • In the mini-game Heavy Weapon on the Xbox, PS3, and PS Vita version, the player will need to control a Lawn Mower with a plant on it in order to shoot zombies.
  • In Portal Combat, the Lawn Mower can be warped away by portals.
  • The Lawn Mower does not interact the Zomboni's Ice Trail at all.
  • As of a recent update on the mobile versions of the game, the lawn mower is now locked behind ads, as only 3 spawn instead of 5, and you must watch ads to get more.
    • This did not end up going unnoticed, as this change resulted in a lot of backlash from the plants vs zombies community.

Specific to Plants vs. Zombies 2

  • The shadow was removed in 3.2.1 update for all lawn mowers.
  • All Gargantuar battles except Ancient Egypt - Day 6 require the player to survive without any lawn mowers.
  • Between the 1.7 update and the 1.9 update, levels with normal objectives and Brain Busters required no loss of any lawn mowers.
  • The Frostbite Caves lawn mower will not damage frozen zombies. This can be a problem especially with frozen Imps or other frozen zombies. Evidence can be found here.

Specific to Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 (China only)

  • The player unlocks the lawn mower by beating a certain level. For Ancient Egypt, they have to beat the Special Delivery Brain Buster. For Pirate Seas, they have to beat Day 5, and so on.
  • The Frostbite Caves lawn mower does not have an idle animation.
