Cattail in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Cattail is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Cattail is an Aquatic plant that attacks zombies by firing homing spikes at the nearest zombie on the lawn in the main games.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Cattail has appeared in five games.

Origins

Cattail(real.jpg

Her tail and name are based on the Typha latifolia, the Cattail, or reed, a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Typha. Her face and head, however, are based on the domestic cat, Felis catus. Her name is a pun on the name "Cattail" as she resembles a cat whose tail is a reed.

In a Q/A stream hosted by Laura Shigihara, she revealed that the pink beanie that Cattail wears is a reference to a beanie that she wears and that George Fan included a beanie as a tribute to her.

Her codename in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, "nekotail" is a pun between her English name and "neko" which is Japanese for cat, referencing the stereotype of anime shows (a mainly Japanese medium) using cats a lot.

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Cattail is obtainable after beating Level 4-5. She upgrades from Lily Pad, replacing the ability to hold plants on top of them with the ability to fire homing spikes, prioritizing airborne Balloon Zombies.

She costs $10,000 to buy from Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies and cost 225 Sun to plant.

Cattail next appears solely in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2. Like the first game, she fires homing spikes, but these spikes now have a chance to stun and also has the chance to fire a huge missile, being able to even instantly kill zombies that are a higher level than her.

Unlike the previous game, Cattail is also simply amphibious, being able to be planted by herself on the land or water.

Both versions of the game have Homing Thistle, a plant that is nearly identical to Cattail in the previous game, even costing the same amount of sun it'd take to plant a Lily Pad and Cattail.

Cattail appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as the first plant in the Tail line, evolving into Dogtail and then Foxtail. She attacked zombies by using the spikes on her tail. Interestingly, while her attacks had the Water element, Cattail herself was of the Earth element.

Her ability was Morale Boost, which increased the wrath of all plants by 100.

Her soulmates were members of the Sunflower line for a damage boost, members of the Magnet line for a health boost, and members of the Doom and Cactus lines together for a critical chance boost.

Cattail's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes. In this game, due to a lack of a homing mechanic, she is simply a 3SunPvZH.png 3StrengthPvZH.png/2HeartPvZH.png Animal Plant with Amphibious in the PvZH Smarty Icon.pngSmarty.

Three of her are given to the player before the last part of the tutorial, along with Cabbage-Pult and Flourish to teach the player about Heights and Amphibious lanes. The game tutorial has the player place her in the Amphibious lane on turn 3.

Laser CattailH.png

There also exists a Laser Cattail, a Galactic Super-rare plant who, of course, is based on Cattail, costing 2SunPvZH.png, having 2StrengthPvZH.png/1HeartPvZH.png stats, having the Amphibious and Team-Up traits, and also in the PvZH Smarty Icon.pngSmarty class.

He gains +1StrengthPvZH.png/+1HeartPvZH.png whenever another plant is played in his lane.

Trivia

CattailO.png
  • Cattail also made an appearance in Plants vs. Zombies Online as a plant exclusive to the game's Adventure Mode. She also had a unique design only used in this game.
  • Some of her plushies have a tongue.
  • It has a counterpart in Plants vs. Zombies 2, which is the Homing Thistle. The only difference between the two is that Cattail fires 2 spikes dealing 20 damage per shot each, while Homing Thistle only fires a spike, but dealing 40 damage per shot each.
  • At the end of the Zombies on Your Lawn music video, Cattail appears next to Laura Shigihara's name. This is most likely intentional since the plant is somewhat based on her.
  • The only time pronouns are ever used for Cattail is during the tutorial in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, confirming her gender.
