- For other uses, see Flag Zombie (disambiguation).
Flag Zombie is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Flag Zombies are similar to Browncoat Zombies, being weak and lacking special abilities of their own, but are also used to signify when a huge wave of zombies is approaching. Flag Zombies are also typically slightly faster than Browncoats.
The Modern counterpart of Flag Zombie is one of the only zombies in the games to have a name, being Brian.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Flag Zombie has appeared in seven games.
History
Plants vs. Zombies
- Main article: Flag Zombie (PvZ)
In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Flag Zombie is the second zombie the player encounters, first appearing in Level 1-2 and being used to signify huge waves, but other than that, he is exactly like a typical Zombie, with the exception of moving slightly faster. Like Zombie, he can have a Ducky Tube counterpart and appears in almost every level, usually not appearing in certain mini-games or puzzles because they lack flags.
While he doesn't appear in I, Zombie, Flag Zombie does appear in Versus Mode, costing 300 brains, the most expensive of any zombie. When he is used, he will summon 7 zombies, being set to 4 Zombies, 2 Conehead Zombies, and a Buckethead Zombie, though this is randomized in the DS version.
The Zombatar that appears in certain versions of the game will replace Flag Zombies if they are made, randomly choosing which one is used if there are multiple. While clothing and skin color options are included when crafting a Zombatar, they will remain the same as a normal Flag Zombie when replacing one.
In Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition, he was renamed and appeared as the Flagger Zombie. It resembles a Commoner Zombie that is holding a flag.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Flag Zombie (PvZ2)
After not being in Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, Flag Zombie returned in Plants vs. Zombies 2, being the second zombie the player encounters (though the fourth in the almanac), once again signifying a huge wave. Like Basic Zombie, Conehead Zombie, and Buckethead Zombie, Flag Zombie only appears in Player's House and Modern Day, but has a variant for every time period in the game, and thus technically appears in every world. Flag Zombie and all his variants Basic speed and Average health.
Certain aspects of Flag Zombie stand out versus the rest of the basic zombies, Flag Zombie only has one Big Wave Beach and ZCorp counterpart (but has two variants in Kongfu World, lacks a Bug Zombie or 8-Bit Zombie counterpart), and if a Kongfu Zombie grabs a Flag at a Weapon Stand in Kongfu World, they can become a Flag Zombie and summon 3 normal Kongfu Zombies.
Flag Zombie has a Veteran counterpart, which is the Rally Zombie, who appears during the extra levels that can appear in Epic Quests. Rally Zombies replace Flag Zombies' roles during these levels (though strangely Jolly Roger Zombie only appears in 3 Pirate Seas extra levels and Future Flag Zombie appears instead of Robo-Rally Zombie on Day 33), having Solid health rather than Average and Speedy speed rather than Basic.
Garden Warfare series
- Main article: Flag Zombie (Spawnable)
Flag Zombie appears as a spawnable in both games in the Garden Warfare series, summoned by glowing dirt piles. Flag Zombies track other zombies to give them a 7% speed boost or a defense boost (depending on the game), though this doesn't affect bosses. Flag Zombies only appear at the start of waves in Garden Ops to signify the start of the wave, similar to the main games. In Garden Warfare 2, he has a bucket on his head instead of having no headwear.
A similar zombie, Heal Zombie, appears in both Garden Warfare games, as well as Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Like Flag Zombie, he goes after other zombies, though in Heal Zombie's case it is to heal them, going off to another zombie when the healing is done. Heal Zombie's model and animations are based off Flag Zombie's, sharing almost the exact same summoning icon in Garden Warfare, sharing the same run animation, and the same attack, the Flag Whack. Heal Zombie is one of the only game zombies to have a name, being named Harry during a Garden Warfare community event.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)
- Main article: Flag Zombie (PvZ: AS)
Flag Zombie returned in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. Similar to Plants vs. Zombies 2, his purpose is to signify a new wave and has world counterparts in every world.
Flag Zombies attack their targets by swinging their flag, and if one is a mini-boss, the Flag Zombie can wave their flag to summon two other zombies in random lanes.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
- Main article: Flag Zombie (PvZH)
Flag Zombie also appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes. He is a Premium Uncommon Professional Zombie in the Hearty class, costs 2 and has 1/3.
His ability reduces the cost of all zombies in the zombie hero's hand by 1, an ability that can stack with other Flag Zombies until all of them are destroyed. In the boss battles of missions Battle for the Belt and Boom at the Backyard Brawl, The Smash starts with one in the third lane.
Plants vs. Zombies 3
- Main article: Flag Zombie (PvZ3)
Flag Zombie's latest reappearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3 as a Neighborhood Zombie, first appearing on floor 4 of the Devour Tower. Flag Zombie now has gained the ability to speed up other zombies in the lane, similar to Garden Warfare.
Similar to Kongfu and Monk Zombie in Kongfu World, Flag Zombies in this game can spawn in different forms, either male or female, spotting a black wig if they're female.

Trivia
- According to the almanac in Plants vs. Zombies 2, his name is Brian, as the almanac states it is "a spelling impaired zombie named Brian."
- "Brian" is an anagram of "Brain."
- The Plants vs. Zombies: Official Guide to Protecting Your Brains jokes about why Flag Zombie moves faster: possibly due to the wind pushing him along like a sailboat.
