Engineer is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. Engineers use the technology in their arsenal to support their teammates and break down plant defenses, such as stunning plants, boosting themselves and other zombies, and providing extra support.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Engineer has appeared in five games.

History

Garden Warfare series

Engineer was first introduced in the first game of the Garden Warfare series, as one of the four classes. Engineer is more of a support class similar to Scientist, but rather than being heal-focused, Engineer is focused towards supporting other zombies. He is the only class that can create Teleporters on the zombie's side, letting them get closer to objectives, as well as the Zombot Turrets that can defend the Teleporters.

Engineer's base abilities in the first game were Sonic Grenade, which flings a grenade able to stun plants in its range and unburry Chompers, stunning them longer if hit while burrowing, Jackhammer, which gives Engineer a speed boost for a limited time and can deal minor damage to plants if they are in the way, and Zombot Drone, which lets Engineer control a drone to fly in the air and deal damage to plants from the air.

In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, due to the zombies getting a proper sniper class, said sniper class received the drone ability and Engineer's drone got replaced with the Big Bolt Blaster, a turret similar to the Pea Gatling and Sunbeam, which lets him fire 100 fast firing projectiles until it runs out, Engineer is vanquished, or the ability is stopped early. While Scientist and Chomper got brand new abilities at the start of the game, Engineer is the only character from the first game to get an ability flat out replaced in the second game.

As with the other playable classes in the Garden Warfare series, he has numerous character variants based on him, each having their own traits which differentiates them from the standard base character.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Zombot Drone Engineer makes a reappearance in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, resembling the appearance in Garden Warfare rather than Garden Warfare 2. Here they are a Premium Uncommon in the PvZH Brainy Icon.pngBrainy class and has both the mustache and science tribes.

They cost 2BrainPvZH.png, have 1StrengthPvZH.png/4HeartPvZH.png, and the Gravestone trait. Their ability is to give +1StrengthPvZH.png to members of the Science tribe, including themselves whenever they deal damage, and serve as one of the two synergy cards for the tribe, the other being Gadget Scientist.

Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville

Engineer makes another appearance in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. He is a PvZ BfN Support Class Icon.png Support class who works on buffing zombies and stunning plants and has had a completely retooled toolkit to fit this style.

His abilities are now Bullhorn Swarm, which unleashes 8 Bullhorns at once to stun plants for very short periods of time, Double Time, which simply boosts the speed of any zombie that steps on it for a limited time, and the Heavy Helper, which not only boosts the rate of fire for allies, but also gives them infinite ammo when in range and the turret can attack on its own. Along with these abilities changes, the Jackhammer has become Engineer's basic sprint, not giving the slight damage, but allows him to sprint in any direction and prevent Chomper burrows.

Unlike in the Garden Warfare series, Engineer no longer has any character variants, but instead has a large number of character upgrades, some of which grant abilities to Engineer's primary weapon and abilities.

Engineer's latest reappearance was in Plants vs. Zombies 3 in two forms, the Zombot Drone Engineer, which has their name from Heroes and Jackhammer Zombie, who has Engineer's Garden Warfare appearance.

Zombot Drone Engineer was a Lab zombie labeled as a Spawner and Armored threat and had the Electric typing. Her ability had her spawn a Zombot Drone every 8 seconds, which could fly over plants and change lanes after going over a few tiles, having the same type as its spawner.

Jackhammer Zombie3.png

Jackhammer Zombie was a Bank zombie labeled as an Armored threat and had the Earthy typing. His ability was similar to Pole Vaulting Zombie in the first game, jumping over the first plant he runs into with his jackhammer, before proceding normally. He was the last zombie to be encountered in the Devour Tower, first appearing on the 32nd Floor.
